I try to get the lowest action possible on all my guitars. All my guitars have action lower than 1.3 mm at the last fret. Some guitars are under 1mm. I just want to know whats the lowest i can get my american standard before I get alot of buzz. BTW I will probably put 9s on this one.

Given the plethoria of adjustments that can be made to a strat I'd say if you can get 1mm on other guitars you should beat it with a strat. There is far more room for adjustment after all, particularly with the biflex rod.
Myself i cant get below 3/64's at the 12th fret without getting problems bending. Despite the extensive work i've put into some guitars.

You must pick very lightly.

Thats the thing. On my sg and les paul I can kill the strings and not get buzz. I would be happy with 1.5 on the strat. My friends mim strat is about 2mm. Ive worked on it for about two days and i cant get it lower than 1.5mm. I hope the frets are flatter on the mia.

As mentioned pick attack is very important in avoiding buzz at a low action. I have a heavier attack than most and have my low E set at 6/64 and high E set at just a hair below 5/64. Both measured at the 12th fret. I would be interested in determining how much string gauge affects action/buzz. I use 11's and don't notice much difference in action (from the 10's I had on previously) once I set up my Strat for them.

If your taliking fretwork what you need to do is have the board as level as possible then plane all the frets down so that their height is exactly parallel to the board. Now heres the tricky bit. You need to dome the top of the frets to as near a perfect half circle as possible, whilst not affecting their height by even one smiddgen (about 1thou of a knats knacker).

Do that and all the rest comes down to truss, pitch or bridge adjustments.

No easy feat my friend.

Night night.

Yes, yes. Im not a n00b. Ive had a fret level done before. Im just trying to figure out how low I can go on this type of guitar. I have a ibanez js that has been fret leveled but I still cant get the action lower than my sg. The gauge does have something to do with it. When I changed from 9s to 10s on my gibsons I got to lower my action a little.

When you go from a guitar setup with 9's from fender to 11's you should do a setup because the string tension is much stronger. Doing a initial setup I will just set fender specs of 4/64 at the 17th fret check the nut and make sure the strings are not hanging up and widen if needed not cut deeper though.

Well then as you know your only limits are your skill in re-crown, relief and string gauge.

Didnt meant to imply that you dont know what your doing mate. I always find its better to offer more information than needed. That way when you dont know someone they can make their own mind up.

Much embarrassed
Nick
