I just got an email from the guy that I bought the pickguard from.

It seems that the guitar tech did not follow the installation instructions and wired the switch as a simple on/off for the BRIDGE pickup independent of the 5 position switch.
The switch should operate the NECK pickup and it's function would not change any of my 5 position switch settings if it's in the off position. With the switch in the down position (towards the bridge), it would function normally:

This would make sense as to what Martian said.

1: Neck
2: Neck/Middle
3: Middle
4: Middle/Bridge
5: Bridge

With the switch in the up position (towards the neck), the 5 position selector switch would function as follows:

1: Neck
2: Neck/Middle
3: Neck/Middle
4: Neck/Middle/Bridge
5: Neck/Bridge

This seems easy enough for me to understand.

That's what I said!

Thanks a lot again everyone for all of your help. I am thinking that I just might attempt this project. It will be great to learn, and does not seem like that difficult of a job. I got the directions from the pickguard place. What kills me is that the guy at GC is paid to do this, yet does not understand teh basic wiring of a strat.....

Martian, when this is over, I will be a dangerous tech;P

Correna.

Top work there. Just on the male/female rubbish, dont listen to any garbage denegrading you for being a lady. I do many of my own mods. Some sensible some outlandish and always request the input of my wife. Despite her never having played guitar she has a inbuilt loathing of them. I find the eye for detail that is usualy found on women is a thing of wonder and have learnt to listen.

I just feign deafness when she says 'no you cant have another'.

Seriously top work there. Well done.

Ditto.

I didn't mention a pickup change to my wife: she spotted it with her ears from the next room. You don't mess with that woman's musical sense!

Mind you, I don't think there's much "garbage denegrating women" round here, is there? Our humor gets a bit boyish from time to time, but a smart smack on the back of the head from one of the women users is all we need to get us back on the straight and narrow...

Some very cool women hanging out on the Fender Forum... 8)

Cheers - C

Didnt mean to imply it happening on the forum meant denegrating in general. And thankyou for not pointing out the poor spelling.

I am not on very much, here and there, but love the info!! It is like a big family here, which is cool!

The verdict is still out on me doing the job. I have to get some of the tools to do it. But it would be great learning the ins and outs. I just don't want to mess anything up on my new guitar. I want to play it, not have it be in pieces.

From what was done, I think I just have to reconnect a few of the wires that were rewired wrong.

Correna i thought you had already re-done the mod yourself. Damn my scanning through posts  .

If i were you i'd take it back to GC tell them that they mucked it up and you demand a new pickguard by way of compensation. Then you could do the mod like this
http://www.fralinpickups.com/images/blendschem2.jpg

Far easier to wire and it gives you a volume control over the pickup your swithing on.

Do it, you know you can.

nikininja,

Thanks for that. I was thinking of that route before I saw the "switch"
and should have probably gone that route.

I am going to do the job. I can do a better job than the GC geek, and learn something in the process.

Just a -iss off though. But this happened for a reason, so off to the store I go to get my soldering iron!

Dont get one thats too powerfull to begin with. 10 or 15 watts power should be fine. It will take a little more time to heat up solder when removing wires from pots, but its harder to burn or damage any parts.

Good luck.

I take the view that those in glass houses had better not throw stones. Anyhow: I didn't notice it, which tells you a lot...

Now that's a good attitude! Personally, I'd make the guy at GC put it right as you've already paid him - but your approach will get you further in the long run! Way to go...

I was thinking of talking to the manager at GC. I really don't want anyone else to touch the guitar.

Ok, I have my parts list set, please chime in if you have an opinion.

1.) A decent soldering iron, I was thinking this one:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... =107596965

2.) 60/40 (tin/lead) flux core solder from Radio Shack

3.) Some 22 AWG wire, just in case, I am hoping I don't need it, and I just need to correct the jackals mistake with whats there.

I have wire snips and etc.

Oh yeah...strings.

Hopefully by tomorrow this time I will be rocking!!!

I was thinking of heading out tomorrow.

Looks like a good setup to me. You may want a soldering iron stand and a damp sponge to clean the irons tip on.

All the best with it.

Sounds like a plan!

Some advice:

Have all your work lined up and ergonomically positioned.

Make sure the iron is throughly heated up before starting. The tip should start smoking and that's a good indicator that it's ready.

Try not to inhale the smoke from the melting solder. Remember, among all sorts of other nasty stuff, that's got lead in it.

Don't dwell with the hot iron on the joint you are soldering or you can run the risk of burning the component.

Be as quick but efficient as possible with the hot iron. Once the solder has melted over the joint, back off with the iron. If the joint has dried to a nice shiny connection, that's it. If you have a grayish ball, the solder didn't melt thoroughly.

Keep your eye on the iron at all times so that you don't burn yourself or anything in the surrounding area.

If you run into any problems, some of us should be around, just yell!

Best of luck and make us (and most importantly, yourself) proud!!!

I have it apart. I just need to get my supplies.

It is wired like a dam christmas tree. He had the bridge pup going right to the switch. I am going to wire it like the diagram.

i am actually looking forward to this.

I will probably be doing the surgery tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks for the heads up on being around, and the saftey tips. The last thing I need is lead;)

I want to be playing tomorrow night!!!
