I found some cheapo resistor based attenuators on ebay.

Note its not variable, just plug in and go.
However i found this on DIY ideas if your interested.

I did some investigation of attenuators a couple years ago and thought about building a DIY resistor based project. But then an amp-guru friend of mine let me try out his THD attenuator. It worked okay, but I didn't like the sound any better than my Marshall's built in Master Volume "trick." So I didn't build or buy an attenuator. I can get a decent sound out of that amp without high volume levels.

I got one of those Epiphone Valve Junior 7 watt tube combos when they first came out. I made some simple mods. I can get a pretty decent sound out of it cranked through an old Marshall cabinet!

I also have compared the two and find that whats under the pickguard to be the only real difference.
