I never pull up on my tremolo so I was wondering if it is OK to tighten up the springs and pull the tremolo (were you rest your picking hand) tight against the body. Will this affect tonal qualities or sustain?

I take it yours is floating. Most people have it flush against the body, so it's not like it's rare or anything. Actually, the sustain should get better with the bridge down.

Just detune your guitar alittle bit (take the tension off the strings) and tighten down your tremolo claw in the back, depending on how many springs you've got back there, if you only have 3, you might want to add all five. The whole point is to get those springs in the back tighter than the tension the strings are putting on it, so it holds the bridge down. You'll probably have to bring your guitar back up to tune a few times to see if you've tightened it enough. Once it seems tight enough and bridge is down while intune, you can tighten up that claw just alittle bit more for extra reassuredness.

^ What he said. You will need to readjust your neck, intonation, and action.

Thanks for your response Guitar_Hurricaine. I have another question if you or anyone else care to respond. The original tremolo springs that came on my 60th Anniversary Strat are longer and not as thick as the aftermarket springs that I bought. I bought extra springs so I could have all five springs installed on my guitar. So to get to my point, the springs installed on the Strat are mix-matched (some are thicker and shorter). Will this affect anything?

Probably won't hurt anything, but I would try to get a matching set of 5.
