thanks for the chart i understand more now.
but what is the difference in playing, im guessin taller frets are better for bendings vibratos and precision in general while lower frets are better for speed, is that correct???

and does the width of the fret make any difference other than the feel on sliding?

Normal school of thought is that you can play faster with Jumbos because your fingertips don't touch the fret board. If your technique os poor though, you can push fretted notes sharp.

The med jumbos are perfect for me, because I can do bends, vibrato, etc. but they are not so deep that I go sharp.

It all really comes down to what your used to. As said by bruno experience is of paramount importance.

Personaly i like small thin flat almost not there frets. Unfortunately you only get that after loads of hard playing or some serious work with a file. What fret enhances what aspect of play is speculative. It really comes down to what your used to. I have no trouble bending a tone and a half on a 7.25" radius neck with low narrow frets. Simply because i'm used to doing it, you may not feel the same or may prefer it more than i do. Jumbo frets are very definate in feel which is a help but the payoff is that you can bend notes sharp if you clutch the strings badly.

I have become used to the Medium jumbos but I still like the feel of the thin ones that were on the old Fenders the seemed a little taller but not to high. I dont like big jumbos.

Yeah, Medium Jumbo are as big as I'll go, too. The slightly smaller frets on the pre-06 MIM Stds are great, too.

I like a taller fret wire.

They require a softer touch, but I'm getting back into playing (or trying to) after over 40 years away from the guitar.

As nikininja said - it's all in what you get used to.

There is a line of thought that says taller and thinner frets provide better tone because less of the string actually comes in contact with the fret.

I read just recently in an old SRV interview how he thought his huge frets contributed a good amount to his tone. He was very specific (some Dunlop model I think...).

I love medium jumbos. To me there perfect in fact when I had my 62 reissue tele refreted I had them put on plus the fact I have Dimarzio fast tracks on that ax.That is the only guitar of mine I moded.I also changed the screw threaded saddles to brass I guess you can call it my signature series lol.as everyone who plays it wants to buy it.

Its really a matter of feel, what you like best. My 95 MIM has thin, high frets that I really love. I have a Tom Delonge 03 MIM with jumbos, but it doesn't feel to me as good as the 95, although the finish quality of the 03 is much better. I moded the Tom Delonge with Robert Cray 62' pick-ups and electronics, I didn't like the humbucker on the guitar. After all, it is a strat, single coils forever!!!

It's kind of fun having a few different axes with varied fret sizes, neck profiles, fingerboard radii, fingerboard material....
