Why do some Strat bodies have a 3/4" hole routed about 1/2" deep next to the pickup rout, under the pickguard? I also notice that sometimes the same hole will be in the neck pocket. What is the reason for this?

The hole in the neck pocket is there so that a microtilt shim system could be installed, and the hole under the pickguard is so that unpainted guitar bodies can be identified in the factory (for example, an American Series guitar will have a different number of holes than a Highway One).
