Fender says 85% of the Hwy 1 is made in the USA. Can anyone tell me what the 15% that is not consists of.

Probably some of the hardware.

Does it really matter though?

I've heard some of the hardware like the trem is outsourced but I can't be sure.
I have a Highway One HSS and I love it no matter where it was made.
I don't know if you've noticed but whenever the topic of HighwayOnes come up it has been known to get heated.

On a side note it's good to hear from someone close to home. :D

Yeah...we are only a few miles apart. :D
Why does the topic of Hwy One's get so heated?

No, it doesn't matter. I was just curious.

I can speak from experience on this one !
I own a pile of HWY 1 Strats (6) and have re-done them all. In the process, I replaced the bridge saddles with Graph Tech Ferraglides.
When ordering the saddles, I got the ones to fit Vintage Strat bridge.
Those worked on the older HWY's. But the newer ones (2005-on) were a problem !
My guitar guy said the Vintage Strat ones were TOO WIDE for the newer HWYs.
I ordered a set of MEXICAN Strat Ferraglides and.....problem solved....perfect fit!!

Let's just say we have some good people here that are very passionate about their guitars. I have respect for all of them. :D

I would guess some of the wiring, pots, knobs and little components are not made in the US. On that guitars and most products in general.

15%??!?

How? By weight? By volume? By number of parts (and does a tuning machine count as much as, say, the body?

According to Fender Customer Service, most, if not all Stratocaster hardware is made outside the USA. This includes tuners, bridge and tremelo. You can bet the circuitry is all made outside the USA. You can also bet that, unless its Custom Shop, most or maybe all pups are made outside the USA.

If the guitar is an MIA, it pretty much refers to the body and neck.

Goes back to the same thing with cars, with my sister's American Dodge being build in Brazil, and my "import" Honda build in Ohio.

I don't care where the parts were made or assembled. I love my Highway 1 Stratocaster. I also have a Squire Classic Vibe 60's which was crafted in China of all places. I love that guitar too. Good sound, quality craftsmanship, plays nice, and a good price (both guitars). I do not want to stir the HWY 1 VS American Standard pot any more than it already is; but, I would put my CV against any Fender Standard (MIM) and my HWY 1 against any American Standard (MIA).
