I just picked another one of these up new at GC. Set up and everything is great with one exception. The frets are pretty sharp. I got a slight cut sliding down the neck. Would this be under warranty or would I have to take it to a tech and have them some the fret edges.
Thanks :?

Hi Blueswaite: where I come from that issue is counted part of a shop's regular care of its stock. Definitely it should be put right under warranty - and it is very quick and easy to do so. But then it shouldn't have got into this state in the first place.

Unfortunately, yours is not the first Strat we've heard about from Guitar Center with sharp fret ends. It's down to poor climate control in store, rather than anything to do with the quality of the goods themselves.

Hope they sort it for you without bother.

Cheers - C

This would definitely be a warranty issue where a tech would have to feather down the, "fret sprout". Make absolutely sure that whomever you take it to knows what (s)he is doing. Just because a given store (especially a chain store) has a 'tech' or even more than one, the competency level should never automatically be presumed.

Thanks I e-mailed Fender to make sure it was covered under warranty. They have a service center about 20 minuets from me I'll call them tomorrow.
Again Thanks

I called 3 GCs around me and they said the same thing. Because of the winter and the dry humidity the fret board shrinks. With the warmer weather it should be all right once the humidity gets up some.
They feel I should wait alittle and see if it expands back.
What do you guys think
Thanks

I live in Ohio. What they are say from setting all winter it dries out the fret board and it shrinks because of the heat and loss of humidity... Once the weather gets warmer and more humid it expands. This has also been a colder than usual April and May. We have had to run the furnace several times.
I did a search on the web and it seems they may be right . The site said most of the time they will expand back to were they were but ocassionaly they have seen were it only expands about 90% cent.
So I am taking it to a tech to see what he thinks. I think they will be able to take it down some
Know one knows why some guitars same model and wood will and some won't. Nature of the wood I guess.
Thanks for the input.

Granted, humidity MAY lesson the situation but you are treating a symptom and not a cause. Be prepared to put up with it seasonally and/or during atypical climates then.

When I bought mine new, it had the fret sprout. I showed it to the store's 22 year old salesman who just happened to be the store's, "master gutar tech". He acknowledged the problem, and gave me the same story you got. I stated to him the same conditions as in my prior paragraph. He totally reversed his position and said they would have to send it back to Fender to be 'repaired' at no cost to me. I then used the whole scenario as an extremely successful bargaining point. I bought it, "as is" and saved BIG bucks! I took care of the fret sprout immediately thereafter.

Thanks I agree with you if this did this every winter I would not be able to play it. The frets are almost a 1/16 past the fret board on both sides all the way down the neck. I think this is extremely excessive.
There going to have to give me another one.
Thanks

1/16th is preposterous. I thought Ohio would be a fairly temperate climate much like the south of france. A bit warm in the summer a bit cold in the winter.

I would certainly send it back. If you go taking 1/16th off either side of the fret you could cause all kinds of troubles.

I like strats mainly but very ocassionally like humbucker pickups. I think I may get the VG Strat It's and american strat by itself or with modeling.
They are discontinuing it and have dropped the price to $999. dI like that if you don't use the modeling you can use it as a standard strat.
Thanks Again
