I've got a late 80's Strat wih a Floyd Rose style tremolo installed - to be more specific it's a Fender Ex-Trem, and it's pretty similar to a Floyd Rose original.

I'm needing a whammy bar to get some Dimebag dive-bombs happening, but i'm not sure exactly what type I need (ie - screw in, pop in). I bought a whammy bar off eBay that's supposed to retro-fit all Fender licensed Floyd Rose copies of the time period, but it's no good - i'll need to take a saw to the trem block in order to make it fit. I'm not prepared to do this - i'd rather just get the rigt bar.

Can anyone in the know offer me specific information as to what variety of whammy bar i'll need? If you can offer a photo i'll be forever grateful.

I bought a pre-owned Strat from Japan recently, which appears to be quite similar to what you have. Also supplied with Fender's Floyd Rose licensed "EX-TREM" and an HSS pickup configuration. The guitar was advertised as a "Pro Feel" series Stratocaster.
It didn't come with any whammy bar, however.

So I got a standard 6mm Floyd Rose tremolo arm cheaply on eBay, but it doesn't fit, unfortunately. Seems to have the appropriate diameter, but the screw attached to the bar doesn't have anything to cling onto on the tremolo itself.

Here's a picture of the tremolo and the (non-fitting) whammy bar: http://yfrog.com/h85ec3j

Any hint on what bar to get for this EX-trem would be much appreciated!
Cheers!

Go and find a tech with a big box of spare trem arms.. chances are, one of them will fit!

Check this out. Replace the whole bushing and everything. If you have questions, I think they have a Customer Service number.

Thanks very much for your response! I've been thinking of taking it to a shop for some guidance, but as my first Floyd Rose equipped guitar, I guess I just assumed these Floyd trems all used standard parts. Lesson learned!

That whammy on prorockgear.com needs some work on the tremolo itself, if I understand it correctly, so that would be my second option. Plus I live in Europe, so I'm not sure if they would even deliver it here...

So I suppose I'll get the thing looked at by the local music shops first, and see what they can come up with.

Thanks for the help, once again!

Added Jul. 7th:

So, as I decided to take the strings off the Strat to finally get the whole thing deep cleaned, it was a nice opportunity to take the trem off as well. Actually took the tremolo itself apart also, to get all the small parts a little rub.

Also took the tremolo to a shop today to try out some whammy bars. It appears that the EX-TREM uses a regular bar that screws right into the hole of the tremolo, much like the whammy bar of my Jazzmaster, but slightly thicker. The clerk in the shop I went to also noticed a screw on the underside of the tremolo, that can be used to adjust how far down you want the whammy bar to go. Adjust it just a little to decide where the bar locks in position, if you don't want it dangling while you play.

Some pics here: http://yfrog.com/message/thread/id/1_89057616545841152

Here's another picture for a closer look of the shaft of the whammy bar, compared with the Jazzmaster one: http://yfrog.com/kesiwrj
The Ex-trem bar seems to be roughly a millimetre thicker (~5mm in total), and has a little broader screw tracks than the latter.

Hope that helps anyone searching for the same thing.
Cheers!
