I thought that is what a 'belly' cut on the Strat is for!

But really the history of BB's guitars seem to revolve around stuffing the F-holes of an ES-345 so it wouldn't feedback. That's why his current guitar has no F-holes. My ES-347 has the F-holes and the same hardware. He was a big fan of T-bone Walker who probably played a Byrdland. He also started playing in the 40's so he would play an archtop, instead of solid-bodies.

All artists play whatever is available and like to try new stuff. A picture would be worth a thousand words, tho.
