Stratmansteve- to answer your question, Keeley and all the pedal modders can do A LOT to a pedal and completely change the sound. I had the chance to buy a Keeley modded DS1 for almost nothing, I had a few bucks and ponied up having never heard the "unmodded" DS1. It sounds great, but I didn't truly appreciate it until I bought a stock DS1 for $15 to compare. Wow. That's all I can say- day and night difference. The Keeley is much thicker while remaining transparent, a much cleaner signal with better sounding distortion, plus a whole bunch more output. It has a toggle between 2 modes, as some modded pedals do, that gives is more flexability. Was the Keeley worth it? To my ears, and my wallet, a strong yes!

As for the question posed by the topic, I have a Tubeworks Real Tube pedal that has a great warm overdrive tone. I've had forever, and the ability to switch out preamp tubes and play with different tones is a definite plus. I also recently bought an Effects Boutique SRB808+ on eBay. It's truly custom made to your specs (how cool is that?!)- you can choose the clipping type as well as a host of other options. It's very reasonably priced and very flexible. Mine is true bypass, twin toggle (one is a fat boost, the other is a clipping/diode selector, switches from Marshall-type OD to TS808 to Clean Boost/Dumble OD). Bang for the buck, I think this pedal is the best out there. It's super easy to dial in tons of great sounds.

MIM standard Strat w/super slinky's, Fender FM 25 DSP combo amp... not my post originally, and don't mean to stray from the Strat forum, but if I'm in the mood to play some blues I'll usually pick up my high action acoustic and a bottleneck.

I play my HW1 through a Visual Sound Route 66 American Over drive. It is two pedals combined into one with an overdrive using the same chip as the TS-808 and a compressor with all the right options (sustain, tone, gain). I can get such great tones and with the overdrive and compressor both on and sustain at full it gets a great Jimi Hendrix fuzz. Other then that I just run my strat straight into my Pro Reverb and get the tubes warmed up enough for some slight break up and natural overdrive.

Nothing better than Fender (guitar) on Fender (amp) action!

Best one I ever had was the MXR Flanger. They haven't made them for a long time but you can still find them occasionally on e-Bay. One of these along with the old stand by - Cry Baby wah wah pedal and a good quality echo unit were all I ever needed.

My pedalboard is based around Damage Control pedals. They are awesome and all valve based.

I find the womanizer pedal gives me great Blues tones. Althougy they actually do a Blues specific pedal I haven't tried it. I find the womanizer gives me sparkling cleans though blues to classic rock tones. Perfect - but not cheap.

cheers

I guess it depends on what type of blues you are trying to achieve. I like power tube saturation to give me grit. Sometimes I slam the preamp with a clean boost to put some more oomph in to it. Other times when I can not turn up to get that power amp saturation I will use a Barber LTD overdrive to simulate the power tube saturation.

I think that a lot of the sound depends on the amp. You can tweak pedals to do whatever you want them to do, but the final "warm" sound depends on the amp you're using.

I am using a Fender Deluxe White Lightning and it's great for that kind of warm, tube sound. Here's the pedals I've been using to toy around with the blues sounds i want:

Boss CS-2 Compression Sustainer
Electro Harmonix Holy Grail Reverb
Boss DD-6 Digital Delay
Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion

I love the crunch on the OS-2 because you can adjust between an overdriven and distorted sound.

what i do for bluesy SRV type tone is have my clean channel and then use the BOSS GE-7 equilizer and have the gain 3/4 way up and then the knobs can be to your preference, i usually do a "frown" type motion
