Hi All,

Well, it seems the only thing Fender does consistently is maintain a high level of inconsistency across all of its models.

I'm researching an American Fender Deluxe Plus Stratocaster and having trouble pinpointing a particular feature that I'm completely unfamiliar with. That is a built-in pre-amp.

I don't know what a pre-amp is or what it does. Can someone explain this feature?

Thanks.

A built in preamp is basically an active EQ that not only boosts the signal from the guitar (the idea being that you should hear more of the guitar itself), but also typically includes more specific controls over your tone ie. Treble, Mid, Bass... Most preamps run on a single 9V battery, but some newer acoustics have started using AA batteries instead. The preamp in an electric guitar has always been somewhat of a novelty, other than in guitars with active pickups (EMGs most commonly) ,but is a much more common thing in basses. Hope that sort of answered your question. I'm sure there will be a number of other members along shortly to elaborate.

Is it the guitar from the early 80's that fender pushed at eric clapton? If so its a mid boost preamp. Not sure what level of boost it gave though. I know its not 25db as i remember that clapton wanted more boost.

No mention of any boost here, they seem clued up

I did not no the Deluxe Plus had a boost! I thought they were just Ash caped Deluxes with a pair of Silver Lace and a Blue. I no they had different bridges and guards over the years.

The Strat Plus Eric Clapton had the 25db Mis boost I looked in the catalog I do not see where the Deluxe Plus had that feature. At the time the Deluxe Plus guitars where get deals for what you got, very nice axes.

Here's the description the seller gives:

For sale is a 1993 American Fender Deluxe Plus Stratocaster in decent condition.

I've decided to sell my strat as I dont play it anymore. The guitar has the usual nicks and scratches and wear of any guitar thats been played. The guitar should be brought to someone who can do a proper setup to get the guitar playing as best as possible. The preamp has been upgraded to an active EMG preamp for a David Gilmour sound.

These guitars are going for $1000 on eBay however due to needing a tune up and having the preamp changed, I am selling for $650. The guitar works fine and sounds good.

This is pickup and cash only.

It certainly isn't in any of the Frontlines from that era (or before or after... I have 20+ years worth). If it's a '99 then I am almost certain that it has been modded. Almost looks like Master Volume/Stacked Tone(maybe treble/bass)/Mid. The switches could be anything... Active/passive.... Over ride for the bridge pickup to allow both neck and bridge, or all three pickups... Series/Parallel... I really wish I had this thing in front of me so I could poke and prod it a bit. Either way looks like a fine guitar, even if I was never big on those bridges, and none of the modifications would be difficult to reverse (if that's the case)

Ah... '93 that would explain the nut. They started using the LSR roller nut by the middle of '93. Still don't see anything with that set up though. Even minus the extra mini toggles.

Well... there you go. You must have posted this info while I was busy typing. The seller does make it sound as if there was an existing preamp, but most likely not.
