In the latest issue of Premier Guitar Magazine is an article about a 1961 Fender Stratocaster in Tahitian Coral Wow,this is a big deal. For years experts have said that this color did not exist.According to Vintage Guitar Info Guy "Fender never had a color in its pallet called Coral Pink or Salmon Pink. This color is mostly likely Fiesta Red, which has a very pink hue." Wrong! This is like finding the Holy Grail of Fender Telecasters.

An interesting thing about that article, though, which highlights a basic problem with this kind of vintage relic worship:

They show a picture of the neck pocket and neck heel, and state that you can see that a glob of paint has stuck to the neck, leaving a mark in the neck pocket that precisely matches the glob on the neck heel. The writer says this "proves that the color is original."

No, it doesn't. It proves that this neck and this body were pressed together when the paint was still tacky on the guitar. That is not the same as proving the authenticity or originality of the paint.

Knowing how easily people can have their logic scrambled, I would make sure that I always stuck the bodies and necks together on my counterfeits while the paint was still tacky. The satisfying "snap" when they were pulled apart for the first time would probably even convince most collectors that the guitar had never been disassembled. :D

I'm not saying the guitar in the picture above isn't 100% authentic. I'm just saying that collectors leap to a lot of conclusions.

After reading what you wrote I went to look up a good source on weird vintage guitars- "Bass Culture". For those of you who don't know, "Bass Culture" has the guitar and bass collection of The Who's John Entwistle.

I noticed that the Tahitian Coral guitar pictured looks a whole lot like Entwistle's 1963 Burgundy Mist P-Bass on page 40 of the book. It looks nothing like his custom colored Salmon Pink Jazz Bass. Pretty weird if you ask me.
