Hi, I'm new in this forum and I would like to get some of your suggestions and opinions about Vintage 62 and Deluxe Ash. I'm having a hard time deciding which one should I get. I really like the sound of the Vintage 62, but the Ash wood seems beautiful. What's the difference in terms of tonal sounds between alder and ash woods, is there also a difference in neck profile between the two model. Thanks much in advance.

I went with the Ash deluxe, for many reasons including the s-1 switch, the ash two piece body (which gives a brighter tone than alder), the better finish, the locking tuners, the three ply pickguard but two things made my decision, the truss rod opening is on the headstock on the deluxe not at the end of the neck like the RI62 (its easier to adjust), and the deluxe like the standard had the micro tilt system which can be handy, down the road.

Cheers

Welcome!

This Alder vs. Ash tonality thing has been beaten to death, here and at a thousand other guitar forums. Suffice it to say that with a tweak of the amp, either can emulate the other.

As to the necks, the Deluxe is a bit 'thicker' all around with bigger frets and one more of them at that. Also, the radius of the 62 is steeper than that of the Deluxe (7.25" vs 9.5"). Of note is the fact that even with mass produced guitars (like both of these models), there will be subtle differences within the same model. Consequently, you'd really have to play the specific specimens you're interested in.

Plus, you can always retrofit '57/'62 Fender PUs on a Deluxe, something I'm thinking of doing to an American Standard!

Shame they do do a Standard in Surf Green 'though!

I'm not to keen on the neck profile, fret size, fretborad radius or single ply scratchplate on the vintage, but love the tone!

In this picker's opinion. an American Deluxe is a magnificent, unique instrument way, way able to stand on its own, which in this opinion should not be confused with or compared with a Vintage.
