I have two identical American Standard strats that I just got back from my guitar tech, with fret dress. They have been set up identical to each other, except one guitar has 10-52 and the other has 11-52.

The 11-52 has and annoying open string buzz on the G and particularly the D string. And I don't believe it to be low action at the nut. It measures 1.1mm at the bottom of the string at nut and top of fret board and about .18+ at the underside of string top of first fret.

My relief is about 0.8 and my action is 5/64 on all strings at the 17th fret with capo at the 1st. The tremolo is flush with the body.

Strange thing is, I can pick it open fairly hard with my thumb and no buzz, but as soon as I use a pick- sitarish.

I just can't understand why one would buzz and not the other. I thought heavier strings have a smaller eliptical pattern too.

Hope anyone can offer advise.
Cheers

Look at the first fret height. It could be a mistake on the dress. Usualy for a level and dress i tend to work from the first fret as i find it never wears as much as other frets. If your tech has leveled your frets off the first then set you action at the 12th theres a chance it could be zinging off the top of the first fret.
Thats the worst case scenario it could also be-

Nut slot height (measurements off the fretboard have no place in this. Measurement off the fret does)
Dirty or rough nut slot, clean it out with a soft toothbrush.
Not enough back pressure from the nut to the tuner. This is unlikely on the G string, only really applicable if the nut is cut way too low and near the fretboard.
The nut slot is cut too wide. Always better to be tight than loose. I dont widen slots for a string size jump of 1 or 2 gauges up. The strings will wear into the slots if there is any undue tightness, which in itself is unlikely.
The front to back rake of the slot is too flat. Pretty much a new nut or superglue and nut dust for a temporary repair.

Also please check the saddle for any grooves worn into it.

I found that with new 11s that sometimes a buzz can occur on the string trees rather than on or over the fret board. If this is the case it should disapear as the strings bed in.

It's annoying and hard to find.

Thanks for your help. I think you may be right with the first fret being on the high side, buty i'm going to cut a new nut to rule that possibility out.
Cheers :D
