I'm hoping some of the experienced players here can help me solve this. I changed the strings on my Highway 1 strat over the weekend...and while the strings were off I cleaned and treated my fretboard...no problems.

I then put on new strings. I seemed to have them wrapped correctly on the tuning pegs and everything.

Tuning took a little while...I'm using a Korg tuner. My question is before the string change when I tuned...it was very straight forward...the string number and note would appear for each string and I would tune it to the middle of the range and the light would turn green. easy.

After the string change the tuning was the same for mostly all except for the 1st E string...the display fluctuates bertween the 1st E and the 6th E when I stroke the 1st E string. It never did this before.

Is something going on here??

Thanks for your help.

It takes a little longer to tune and stretch the new strings, so your tuner was on longer than just for a little tweak. I would suggest changing the batteries in the tuner, they might be weak. I have also seen a tuner do that if the volume knob was turned way down.

When using a electronic tuner i turn the tone on the guitar right down and use the neck pickup, lower the volume to 8 too. It sounds to me that the strings are lively and giving off a lot of natural harmonics (great for good tone) that interfere with tuner readings. Lowering the tone will lower the treble and cut a lot of these out.

Follow NikiNinja's great advise. This should help. And as mentioned earlier make sure your properly stretching the strings.

Have fun and rock on!!

Super....that makes lots of sense...thanks very much for the info...much appreciated. I think since I didn't have it hooked up to my amp, that I had all the dials turned up to max.
