If you lik to play fast, I suggest gator grips or totex in the thicker sizes. You need a rigid pick to go fast and clean. You can always soften the attack by holding the pick less parallel to the string. I like the above, plus the heavy fender MOTO's. Some gorilla snot (or plain pine tar) works well if you have sweaty hands and get slippery fingers. Experimentation takes a little bit of time and not every pick is gonna be cheap. When you no longer easily lose or misplace picks, you'll maybe want something of conversational value to carry in your pocket; kinda like pocket watches, silver dollars to flip, etc... It's part of a player's identity and having something as simple as a brass or stone pick on you at all times can become a trademark of your presence.

They look cool but 5 buck for a guitar pick that Ill loose in a couple days is kinda steep. I like the green dunlops.

I have tried the v picks 2 different ones. i like the tone and control but they wore so that they were scratchy on the strings and i don't like that. Even though you can regroom them it was a pain to stop every half an hour to do so. i guess i play with too heave of a stroke. so everybody else would probably love them. 8)

You must have an extremely heavy hand. I have never heard of anyone wearing out a V-Pick.

I use silver quarters (pre 1964) filed to a pick shape. It ain't cheap but they are nice and stiff, don't get all slippery with sweat, and they sound fantastic.

I personally swear by dunlop tortex .73mm

when i started i bought a handfull of picks in all sizes and styles but i settled on the .73, I've occasionally used a jazz 3 when the mood struck me, but usually if i need something a little harder i'll use a medium dunlop tortise thumb pick.

For acoustics i'll occasionally use a DAVA hybrid pick, very effective for both hard fast attack and clean rythm strumming.

Just started using a Red Bear D-style Heavy pick with the fancy grip holes and speed bevel... wouldn't have thought a pick could make such a difference, but it does! Mrs mondo ordered one for my birthday, as $20-odd for one pick is not a sum I could have pulled the trigger on myself. I've been using the same old Jazz III for 15 years or more, so I guess I'm not so likely to lose this. Red Bear's "Tortis" (some sort of organic tortoiseshell-analogue) does indeed feel like the real thing. Glides across the strings!

I also switch between Jazz III's and regular picks. I use fender heavy pearloid picks that I shape down with a file. I used to use medium, but I found early on, that when I used heavy gauge, they forced me to use a lighter grip, which is the right way to play anyway, and it improved my picking. Now its just what I use. I also recommend the pearloid over the tortiseshell, although they are the same thickness, they are a harder plastic, and IMO gives your pick attack a more percussive sound.,

Dunlop Delrin .96 for me. They are slick, they grip, and I have yet to see one break. I always run out because people always want them and they're impossible to find in stores.

The only problem is that damn hot pink color they come in. I would have chosen vomit green, dirt brown, burnt orange,or just about any other color over hot pink. Shell pink is a different story. :)

On 9-42's I use Dunlop Ultex, .73 w/ Gorilla Snot applied.

On 10-46's, I use Dunlop Tortex .88 w/ Gorilla Snot applied.

I'm thinking about going back to my roots and trying out Fender tear drop picks again, no reason, was just thinking about that last night while playing a standard pick an hearing it occasionally touch the pick guard, but I don't have that issue with the tear drops.

But, luv the Ultex, it really, REALLY works well on a tele, haven't tried them on a strat, yet. But, I'll be getting a strat shortly. The Ultex brings out deep rich lows, cutting mids, and airy highs...given' away my secret weapon here. Use the secret weapon wisely.

I use a brass pick. No sound like metal on metal. I havent noticed it cut through strings, even when i used to go mad playing hardcore a few years back. I've used the same one for about 4 years now. The edge is like a razor and my thumb has worn a curve into the flat of it.

I must get round to making some more.

Ive read posts by people who say they've broken picks playing. I for the life of me cant see how a pick can break, at least medium or heavy. I can picture picks breaking playing a bass maybe. I don't doubt that they did break their picks, I just dont know what you'd have to do for that to happen, especially more than a few times like Ive read on customer product reviews.

Kinda makes you wonder what condition their guitar is in if they break picks?
