now that's a great idea Jay.

You could post pictures of yourself buying the lighter fluid, donning a headband etc. Threaten to cut off a tuning key as a warning, good stuff.

It depends on what famous guitar. I would tell everyone I have it. The difference would be whether or not I would sell it for crazy amounts of cash. If it was Hedrix's I would sell it and get a bunch of nice guitars. If it was "Lenny" I sure would keep it.

Rowdy would be quite the improvement on my behaviour of late. Jay you've never been in my bad books mate. My main problem is that i know british humour doesnt always cross the atlantic too well. When i hear it from residents way out west i find it a little disconcerting. Still i'm used to it now so fire away guys.

Now how about fusing hendrix dna with gamma radiation and flooding your body with it much like Dr David Banner. Everytime you hear something played poorly you turn into the incredible hendrix. Goofy, tripping with huge hands and a massive thingy.

I reckon we should get round uli roth's and demand that guitar in the name of science.

well, it looks like we have just founded the Hendrix Genome Project, we'll leave decoding the strands and replicating them to Ceri.

53 Strat

Now thats a guitar i'd like to see. Most unusual.

The body , bridge and trem block are from late 53. The rest is a collection of parts ,some old and some not so old.

Wow wow wow. Notice the fretboard is further from the pickguard than with modern strats. The truss adjustment screw is showing quite a good bit. The neck pocket cant be as deep as it is with the latter strats. Is the forearm contour not as slanted as with latter strats?

53strat. Thanks for showing me where what i love comes from.

Cheers pal.

Jay i've heard of a couple of 53's. I remember a bloke wrote into a guitar mag with a story about his guitar being a 53. He was consequently belittled by the magazines editor. In reality if you look at the timeline of fender instruments strat development started around the end of 52. When people started saying tele's are great but cut into my arm. The fact that the strat wasnt commercially released until 54 doesnt negate a 53 body being released on a 54 guitar. I'd bet that a few strats would of been released in 53 too. Leo was constantly listening to the opinions of players for instrument development. The idea that he'd build one based on a customers requirements after said input was given doesnt seem so outlandish. Remember in the 50's fender were not the conglomerate they are today.

All speculation on my part, no real facts. I find it easy to believe though.

And orville, lovely strat man. Still own it? What year?

EDIT: Interesting fact, the guitar wasnt heard of being sold. But the strap that accompanied the guitar was sold on an auction, now Gilmour owns the purple suede strap.

Thanks for that Strap info. I do recall hearing about that.

I do still own that Black lefty. It's a 1971. Four bolt, two-piece maple neck (ie, no skunk stripe, maple fingerboard ontop a maple neck). Stock except for the strap locks.

Very cool. I hope to own one one day. Take good care of it!

And guys about saying that Hendrix's stuff isnt valuable, I would say the same about #1, blackie, brownie, lenny, and bb king's lucille (which of course was stolen back in the late 50's to early 60's as I recall hearing from the man on an interview). None of them really interest me. Basically for the fact that they have known whereabouts and arent so different than regular stratocasters and es-335's around from the same respective years. Modified or not.

Hendrix's guitar setup was totally different than the rest. His amps were modified (as verified by Billy Cox in the 70's and Mitch Mitchell in 1984), his tone was amazingly different than the rest, and his guitars had at LEAST the strings completely different than the rest.

Not only because of the fact that they were staggered reversedly, but due to the fact that the bass E was strung clockwise on the headstock, opposed to normal counterclockwise stringing. The treble E's bridge saddle had no screws and springs to it, and the fact he used different types of gauges for each string on his guitar (as acknowledged by Buddy Miles in 1997, and reaffirmed by Billy Cox on 1998).

Black Beauty is a disappeared DIFFERENT stratocaster, favourite one out of Hendrix's probably vast collection of guitars. A mint condition guitar, might I add.

Mitch Mitchell saying that Hendrix favourited the White One was just merchandising. I bet every Hendrix guitar sold today is always going to be his favourite.

By the way, correcting a mistake I made on Monika Dannemann earlier on the topic, she died on 1996 and not on 1994.

I think I misworded my topic in a lot of ways. I think I actually meant:

"If you owned your favorite guitar player's guitar, would you tell everyone about it if you weren't going to auction?"

No offence, 53 Strat....but how can you validate your claim?

How can you prove that guitar is what you say? Anybody could "super relic" a guitar body, call it "THE" original Strat and them paste a picture.

Lots of scams going on in Strat land. Can you prove its a 1953?

No offence taken BigJay. There are a lot of people that are unaware of the Strat and its history. Here is a pic that was taken by Leo himself and said to dated 1953. The original of this pic is still in Leos old files at G&L guitars.
Note all the grain patterns and mineral deposits in the wood.

Here is a pic of the back of my guitar and the pic Leo took in 53 of the back of the prototype showing the grain of the wood , the mineral deposits in the grain and the 3 spring trem.

The pictures Leo took and the story of how this guitar came to being are all in Richard Smiths book "Fender, the sound heard around the world" In Richards book it is said that Leos first prototype didn't work at all and it was destroyed. His second attempt had the 3 spring trem which he photographed and then decided the 3 spring didn't work very well and then went to 5 spring. My guitar is said to have been made in late 53.
Get Richards book, it will bring you up to snuff on Fender history.
