Hi. I had a question for anyone that might know the answer. I've got an 1998 Clapton Strat that came with the Lace Sensor pickups. I love the guitar but was never really fond of the Lace Sensor pickups and changed them to the Vintage Noiseless that come in the current Clapton Strats. I used the 1MEG Pots that were included with the Vintage Noiseless set I bought and now the guitar is incredibly "high endy" (not in a good way either - it's rather "ice-picky". My question is which pots to use for the volume, tone and mid-boost. I've heard everything from 25K to 50K to 250K to 500K to 1 MEG and can't seem to get a consistent answer anywhere. If anyone knows which pots go with these pickups I could really use the help.

Thanks.

-Darryl

With the midboost installed you need 50k volume, 250k mid boost pot and the tbx pot is 250k and 1meg. The tone pot can be changed for whatever suits you. The volume and midboost are pretty much perfect for their purpose. I tried a 500k volume pot and got nothing but squeal unless it was on 3 or below.

Thanks for the reply. I changed them yesterday using the 1MEG pots that were included with the Vintage Noiseless Set and the guitar is very trebly now - too trebly actually. I removed the TBX circuit and put the standard tone control in its place.

So if I switch to 5K Volume, 250K Tone and 250K Mid-boost will I eliminate the unbearable high end?

Thanks,

-Darryl

You managed to get a 1meg in there aswell as a mid boost circuit without the excessive synth squeal?

How did you do that, no one else seems to be able to.

I strongly recommend you drop into the pickups and accessories forum and check out user Martians thread on vintage noiseless pickups.

No, it doesn't squeal at all...its just very, very, very bright. I've got the treble on my amp turned all the way down and it still sounds too bright. the 1MEG pots most definitely need to come out.

I'll check out that section you mentioned - thanks.

I've just placed an order for 50K and 250K pots from ACME.

Thanks again,

-Darryl

The 50k audio taper and 250k are standard with the midboost circuit and should of been fitted to a clapton strat from new. Unless ofcourse its a £12,000 Tod Krause with vintage correct pickups.

Vintage noiseless are a pain to get right. I've struggled for nearly a year with them. Martians advice is well worth following. What the guy doesnt know about pickups isnt worth learning.

ME answered a question about this somewhere down the line. What I gleaned from all of this is that the Clapton circuit has been very carefully balanced and any attempt to mod it should only be done by someone who knows this kind of science well. Seems to me the best thing to have done was swap out to the next generation guitar or, better yet, have Krause build the real deal.
