Isn't this the Strat area?

Personally, 'am a part time Surf music player and decades-long hardcore surf music (not surfing songs!) enthusiast. There were threads on Surf in the Lounge and there is "Surf Guitar 101" on the net.

And horrors; 'personally admit to playing Surf guitar on such "unsuitable"instruments as an SG and Ibanez Firebird V copy. How crass, eh?

That said, SURF MUSIC FOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What other sport has thousands of pieces of music by hundreds of groups across fifty years?

Not Curling or Badminton. Not even raquetball or snowshowing. Nope, not jogging or croquet, either. Fishing? Uh-uh.

ONLY, ONLY, ONLY SURF!

Like cowbunga, hotdoggers, hodads and honeys...from metrro Chicago, on the North American Inland Seas.

Flatwounds and reverb for all!

I'm kind of a newbie at surf guitar but have always loved the sound. I just got a Jazzmaster recently, mainly because I want to use it for surf music. I also like to play my strats for surf.

Don't know if I can call myself a surf guitarist yet - but I have been working on Sleepwalk lately. :D

I do love me some surf rock, though!

I love surf music!
Playing surf is a great workout. Some of it is right up there with shred and Albert Lee style country! Unfortunately, none of my music friends like surf, so I'm left to play by myself. : (
If anyone's in the NYC area, check out Unsteady Freddie's stuff - http://www.catch-the-waves.com/
He puts on live shows and has internet radio going too.
There's actually a pretty good local scene here for the East Coast!

The best instructional book I've found so far is Hal Leonard Guitar Play-A-Long Surf Volume 23. ISBN # is 0-634-07365-6. It has a good selection of key songs to know, aside from the Jan & Dean and Beach Boys cuts. In case you didn't know, Jan & Dean and the Beach Boys DON'T count as surf music!

Anyway the book has 8 songs and comes with a backing track CD that is really fun to play with.
The are 2 Ventures books that are great to have also. And the Best of Dick Dale book is a must-have!

http://www.surfguitar101.com is the place to go. I'm learning, both how to play guitar AND how to play surf. There's a couple of us on here that also frequent SG101. I'm running:

Squier Deluxe Strat>Korg Pitchblack>D67 Fuzzmite>Line 6 Echo Park>Danelectro Tuna Melt trem>Digiverb>Champ 600. I'll replace the trem with a BYOC or a Colorsound, and the Digiverb with a 63 RI Tank at some point. Then a bigger amp when I get good and start gigging.

That'll be a while.

I have one of those Fender Reverb tanks too, so I can get that sweet sweet tone. I figure get a Teisco del Ray, and then learn some Teisco Del Rey
this was him on a Guitorgan(Guitargon?) would love to get ahold of one.

I surf with 2 Gibson Les Pauls (Faded Double Cut and Melody Maker), a couple of MIM Strats and a MIM Tele; occasionally I'll let loose with some surf on my Peavey JF2 EX. Everything else is just for noodling about, maybe being inspired by something that perks my interest while jamming. My big tube amp is a Peavey Classic 50/212, although the majority of my noodling and jamming is through either my Line6 Guitar POD 2.0, or VOX DA-5.

Oh...and I also have an MIJ Electric VI (Bass VI) with which I've found some potential for surf, spy-fi and spaghetti western types of tunes.

Matt

The band I play in plays about 8 surf songs. When we go to those, I play a strat with the bridge pickup, and reverb.

There's a book w/CD by Dave Celentano on surf guitar how-to and you can play along with some backing tracks with "The Torquays."

Good stuff.
