I'm gravitating towards plekking my Am Dlx because I still have some fret buzz at the recommended string height..

Any experiences ?

Plekking costs $180 and a total setup at one of the Fender authorized service centers costs $200 (fret leveling etc).

I'm sure that I can find a cheaper setup, so the balance is between a normal ++ setup (50 - 80) or plekking.

Cheers

A plek is just a machine. If the operator knows how to set your guitar into the Plek machine and run it correctly, the results will be heavenly. If the job isn't done exactly, you'll end up with a $200 hole in your pocket and the same problem you started with.
I've heard a few stories about bad Plek jobs. I heard stories about great Plek jobs. Research your Plek'er and find put what his track record is.

BTW - Any good luthier should be able to do a fret job and set-up that you'll be more than happy with at half the Plek price.

Took the words right out of my mouth!

Apart from their own website most of what I've heard about the Plek has been right here on this Forum. Unlike rickwicz (above) I've never heard a bad word about it. Everyone seems to have had an excellent experience.

But rickwicz is perfectly right: it ain't a necessity and it is expensive.

On the other hand, I was reading what top builder John Suhr says about why he uses the Plek. He also says it is not vital, but that it does allow him to finish and set up a fret job to absolute perfection and also in ways he couldn't do without it. For example, levelling the frets so that there is a greater relief on the bass side (where the strings vibrate in a wider arc) than on the treble side.

Were I to go for a Plek I'd definitely want to look into that option...

Good luck - and please report back if you do it.

Cheers - C
