Alright, to me this seems like a stupid question, but I just don't know the answer. Would it be possible to put a 3rd tone control on a stratocaster to control the tone of the bridge pickup?

I would suggest just adding a jumper onto the 5 way switch and put the bridge and neck pickups on the same tone control.

My guitar is wired so that the bridge and middle share a tone control. It beats trying to put in another knob.

This makes more sense to me than neck & bridge.

I've seen various wiring diagrams for rewiring Strats in a variety of ways.
Check pickup makers websites.

Why does this make more sense? In a standard wiring with a 5 way switch you have

1. Bridge
2. Bridge/Middle
3. Middle
4. Middle/Neck
5. Neck

You never have the Bridge and Neck pickups on at the same time. So, If you put the Bridge and Neck pickups on the same tone control in positions 2 and 4 you still have individual tone controls for each pickup.

Seen the JV Stratocaster's specs?

It's actually for that reason I thought it makes more sense.

Now I don't have a Strat, so I'm basing it on experience with other guitars, and when I've played others' Strats. I tend to set my tone differently between the neck & bridge pickups--so if I switch from one to the other and they have different tone controls I only have to make one move--changing pickups. If they have the same tone control I'd have to switch pickups and then also change the tone control. So for me it makes more sense to only change one thing.

The middle & bridge pickups I would more likely have set the same, so no adjustments needed.

Of course, that's how I would do it--it makes sense to me based on how I play. So take that for what it's worth. If you'd prefer a different arrangement based on how you play--hey--you're doing a mod--so do it how you play.

On a Standard wired Strat you can. There are 2 ways to do it. Either swap the neck and middle or bridge and middle wires on the 5 way.

You would end up with:

1. Middle
2. Middle/Bridge
3. Bridge
4. Bridge/Neck
5. Neck

or

1. Bridge
2. Bridge/Neck
3. Neck
4. Neck/Middle
5. Middle

HOWEVER If your Middle pickup is RW/RP you would lose that effect in either 2 or 4 depending on which way you go.

Thanks for the advice. I was considering using a tone control for both neck and bridge or bridge and middle, but I like to be able to control the tone of the middle pickup, even when it's in use with the bridge p/up. my guitar has a button to turn on the bridge p/up so in that position I would be unable to control the neck p/up tone individually. So, theoretically, is it possible to add a 3rd tone control? If not, I guess I'll have to sacrifice full control in the neck/bridge and bridge/middle position.

For me it makes more sense to have the bridge/middle wired together. There are many reasons why I like having the neck and bridge tone controls separate. For one, when I use the middle/bridge I'd like to only have to mess with tone one knob, not both. I sometimes switch from the neck pickup (clean) to the bridge, middle/bridge, or middle (dirty) in a song, and I usually keep the neck tone on full and the bridge/middle tone up about 3/4 of the way.

Honestly, I didn't think about it much when I had it wired that way. And either way has is pros and cons. I've learned to adjust to the bridge/middle way, but if I had it wired to the neck/bridge way I probably would've gotten used it with no problem.
