I've just bought an M.I.J. Strat which i've dated to circa 1988/1989 (h-series). I love it, but I know nothing about it. Can anyone help me with what model or series this may be? I'd love to know what the body wood is also (it weighs around 4kg / 8.8 pounds). Pics should explain all.

Also, the trem on this guitar never came with a whammy bar. I want to buy a replacement on Ebay, but I don't know if I need a screw in or pop in bar, or maybe I need something more specific.

Any help is much appreciated.

It's probably one of the HM series.
There is a specific whammy bar (hard to find)

It is a nice looking guitar. Not sure the model. Don't see too many HSH configurations unless modded after market. Looks like a Floyd Rose Tremelo (maybe). You may be able to take it to a guitar shop and see if they can help you find what kind of replacement you need. It may not cost that much and can order and purchace on the spot.

It has the one of the two pickup configurations of a HM strat Hum/Sng/Hum but it has the jack on the front whaich is wrong it should be on the side on an HM strat. I am puzzeld looking at it.

An unusual guitar for sure. The heel contour points to a deluxe. The neck looks like a traditional japanese guitar bar the 22fret board.

Where is the serial no'? Its not on the plate or headstock. The writing at the bottom of the neck looks like it says made in japan.

YOU got a custom made strat which looks like it has HMS an HM pick ups and a American Deluxe body.

Yes that neck plate does not look correct Niki. It almost looks like a mongral!

My sister put me onto it in Japan ($400, can you believe it?) - it arrives the next week. It's all original according to the seller, who still has the original dockets.

From what I gather, it's an MIJ strat exported to the US for assembly, then reimported back to Japan. I'll go over the documents, and hopefully that will explain all.

At the neck joint it says 'Made In Japan' - I can't see the serial number from the pics i've been given. The lightly cutaway heel is a funny effort to me - it's definitely no Jackson or Ibanez contoured heel, and yes, no serial number here either.

The Floyd is a Fender licensed unit, and not the real deal. If some special whammy bat is needed, can somebody point out the specs I should seek? I wouldn't mind knowing the exact distance from anchor point to anchor point either, just for reference.

A curiosity. So far it's a nameless HM custom Strat deluxe HSH with an Americcan body and Japanese lineage.

I have never heard of that , there were guitars built in the U.S. for export to Japan but they were not shiped here and put together then shipped back. That makes like zero sense. Serial numbers with a I prefix number were exported and had Made in U.S.A then there were FN serial numbers for export but as said they all have serial numbers and were Made in U.S.

CV, does that guitar have a contoured heel or is that just a deluxe neck plate on it? I can't tell from the pic myself! :?

I am guessing a contour heel for the holes to line up on that neckplate.Which in odd!

Thanks, I was thinking they could have plugged and drilled new holes. I've not seen one of these before but that means absolutely nothing!
Who is our resident MIJ expert? Chet?

They could have done just that and countoured the heel and put that neck plate on there. Either way there should be a serial number Id. matching its origin. This guitar just seems suspect to me but I do not no everything thats for sure.

Aha! The seller just forwarded me this:

Quote:
This is a Fender Japan STR-650 Stratocaster. These were not an entry level guitar. I believe that this was probably one of the models that was re-imported to Japan similar to most of the signature models that are made in Japan, exported to the US then re-imported to Japan for sale here because the papers for this model guitar are like those ones and not like the standard Japan only models.

Can anyone verify this model's existence? And maybe a little bit of info? I can't find much thru google.
