Dear zzdoc
My apologies if I have become a pest about these thing, the last thing I wish to do is become"that guy" and become a bother. Sometimes I guess my enthusiasm overcomes reason and for this I am sorry. Thanks to you and Scott L for you nice comments and information. Cheers,Craig

Apologies not necessary, Captain Neela. :P These Forums are often a knowledge quest and I have had my own moments of intense curiosity about details, details, details. It's amazing the variety of trivia which have been shared in these columns and the collective knowledge base of the world wide contributors to these discussions.

Actually, I hope uftboy prevails in his quest for a Grigio Silverstone CS Clapton. Saw Eric playing same on Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's broadcast. It is a very interesting pearlescent dark gray Ferrari automobile paint. It almost hooked me, until I brought myself back to reality.
He had inquired the death of the two CS blues with alainlafrance, and we had thought he had settled on one of these until Eric turned up with this new finish. Thus, it began again. Why his passion for this absolutely 100% artist correct instrument, I certainly don't know, but ask alain....he's got an '03 dimed Clapton, (as built for the artist) one of three built by Jack Krause, known as 'The Triplets".

It's the nature of our beast, Craig, and why we all hang out together and keep asking those questions.

Carry on.

Doc

Gratned it was only the one day I saw the VG - but I'm sure it is Ash. I've only seen Aged Cherry Sunburst in ash and the upcharge it carries.

Thanks for all the great info! Our GC still has three left and I'm ready to pull the trigger on a sunburst/maple that is still in the box!

Between zzdoc and wingman, I read something conflicting that I was hoping someone could clear up. When you're not using the roland pickup, are the batteries being used? Can you use the vg with no batteries installed? Thanks!

On the 2 VG's I've owned when the cord to the amp is plugged in the light on the pickguard is "on" this means the batteries are active that is they are being used. With dead batteries or no batteries in the guitar it will still play through the standard pick ups not the Roland pick up as long the knobs are in the normal modes.Hope this clears it up.If you have the tuning knob in other than position N with dead or no batteries you get no sound, but as I stated before if you have everything in the N positions its a regular Stratocaster.cheers

Thanks wingman, that pretty much clears it up. So, if the batteries are in and still have a charge, they're going to be used no matter what mode you're in, correct? I'm guessing the best thing to do, if you want to use it as strictly an american strat, is to just remove the battery pack.

Andy, yes I think you are right, but I think if you try the different modes that you would never think of removing the batteries. With my std. VG I bought 8 Dura Cell rechargeable 2650ma NiMh AA batteries and a charger from a vendor on ebay for about 40 dollars including shipping and I have seen the same deal at a local Target store for these same parts. With this I have two complete sets of batteries with one set always ready as a back up and so far I have not had to change them yet.So what I'm trying to say is that the battery life seems to be no issue with these.cheers

Well I emailed Fender customer service for the specs on the GC FSR VG,and although they promptly got back to me the spec sheet is so wrong in many specs that I not sure I can believe the rest of the information on it.
I was really interested in the type of body wood on it and I posted earlier that I thought it was Ash,because of a comparison with other Alder Bodys I have and the additional weight that was consistent with other Ash bodies I have.Well the spec sheet says Alder, but I still think it's Ash.Some of the other specs that are just plain wrong are it states that it has "American standard pickups" but all the FSR VG's I have seen have SCN's,another error is the spec for pickguard and knobs it says parchment again all I have seen have mint pickguard and aged whit knobs.Just thought you guys would like to know.cheers

Thanks for trying to get the specs - I agree its Ash. All aged cherry SB I've ever seen have been Ash.

Hey Scott L
I believe that the body is ash also as you state that aged cherry is always in the past on ash.Have you picked up the FSR VG yet and if so what do you think of it?How would you say that it compares with your many Eric Johnson models,as far as quality of construction and sound go.Craig

Regarding the EJs vs VGs - I feel the EJs are the best non-custom shop Strats out there as far as quality of materials. The Nitro finishes are beautiful, but that is not a construction issue to me, it a materials and build spec. The VG and EJ are about as polar opposites of build specs as you can get - but not workmanship. I've pointed out to others is the VG was in the same price range as the EJs and Roland had their reputation at risk also.
