That's a good question Nik but I'm sorry I'm like you and would like to know myself! :? Surly it must be sealed or polished in some way!
Maybe several coats of tong oil or even stranger olive oil. Extra Virgin!!!

Bump. niki check out this link!
If you read further down the page it is also used on stone and other surfaces that are porous and completely waterproofs and seals. A varnish or the like would eventually wear off and cause your strings to bind in the nut groove. IMO!
What a dummy I am! You would do this after shaping!

I know that you have to boil the bone in some kind of solution before shaping it. I'm really considering getting a legbone and making a good few slotted nuts. From what i understand the bone needs to be boiled for 2 hours before shaping. I just dont know what it needs to be boiled in.

I believe you just boil in water then soak in peroxide for a few days. Even then the bone can be to oily so you soak it in water ammonia mix.
Skined and gutted a many animals never did the part of saving there bones. I have a few mounts and racks in the house. I actualy sold my Bear that I was able to get and I believe thats what they did with it along with the fur. I did not get picked to take one in the hunt this year

Unless i go slaughter a cow and hack the legs off the carcass it looks to be touch and go as to whether i can get a bone. The laws changed some years ago due to BSE. Bloody ridiculous. Looks like i may have to smuggle some ivory in instead or try stone of some kind. Maybe marble.

You can't try get some from a slaughterhouse? I work in a big bar, I might talk to our meat supplier when I place the order on Monday, and see what they can do for me.( He sells me stuff at his staff price for home--cheaper than we get it at work, as long as i don't let my boss know.)

Nowhere near me will sell me a cow leg bone. Its absolutely insane. What do they think i'm going to do with it? Sit gnawing on it i presume.

hey Ninj: a decent butcher near me always has veal bones on offer for making stock. Perfectly legal - as far as I'm aware...

Alternatively: may I recommend a leg of venison (though not at this time of year, of course) or goat: extremely tasty, with the biproduct of guitar nut material afterwards. Cooking of the bone already accomplished.

There was a Stew-Mac Trade Secrets episode a year or two back where Meastro Erlewine mentioned the idea that bones were better for nut making if they'd been aged by lying around the garden for six months. I spoke about it to my dog owning neighbor and she took it very much to heart: every so often I find a dog chewed, flowerbed aged bone descreetly left by the door, complete with a pretty ribbon tied round it!

(Just can't quite be bothered to take and post a photo of the gift-beribboned bone I have here right this minute, but that's really true!)

Cheers - C

Hello Nikininja,

Over in these parts at just about any pet shop
you can get a bone for pups to chew up, they're
nicley dried & processed and easily fabricated
into a guitar nut. Best of luck on the project.

Cheers.
