Hello,

I have an American Standard HSS. I want to put D'Addario Chromes on it, but, when I do, the bridge lifts well out of the body (well beyond the recommend 1/8"). I tried adjusting the claw screws--no good (lifted the action and didn't solve the problem).

Is there anything I can do, or do I just have to suck it up and use a lighter gauge string?

Thanks for your help,

J

Welcome to the Forum.

It needs a complete setup not just a bridge adjustment.

So I should be able to use that gauge of string, I just need to get it professionally set up?

Thanks,

J

You should be able to use that gauge with no problems if the guitar is setup for them.

Cranking down on the claw screws has to work. You only changed the string gauge by one standard increment. But if you are reluctant to crank down on them, try more springs. It's physics.

You need 5 springs in the back.

hi i have to agree with the others tighten up the springs and if need be
put another spring on then get the allan keys out if the action has risen
it should only be slightly and easy enough to sort out if you check out
the website it runs through servicing your guitar string/pickup height etc
the one thing people forget when putting heavier strings on and take note
those who are using gauge 11 and above it puts more tension on the neck
and thats when things can get really complicated with truss rod adjustment
required anyway hope this helps but you should be ok with tens as ive
put them on every strat ive ever owned :)

My personal recommendation would be 5 springs, but I don't use my trem much.

Chet is correct. 10's were standard on vintage guitars which had a heavy trem block and 5 springs. There's been a trend away from that construction. Many Strats have bridges which seem to be half that thickness. On the vintage trem system. the trem claw has five hooks. You'll need that array plus the heavier springs. Hope your bridge and block can handle that as well.
