frankafru,

If you are looking for sustain, that has more to do with how well your guitar is set-up, and the hardware on it. Although the pick-ups have a little to with it as well, but a guitar with a good set-up is the key for sustain.

For Metal/Rock/Blues you can go with either single coils or humbuckers. Depends on the sound your looking for. If you like the crunch of say Maiden or Metallica then Humbuckers are the ones for you. Since I do not play Jazz or Flameco so I am not sure.

I have Alnico III's and V's in my guitar. These are single coils p-ups. I play Rock/Metal/Blues and have no "sustain" issues. I can play notes and hold them for at least 20 seconds if I wanted to. Again this has more to do with my set-up than my Pick-ups.

Best of luck. Hope you find what your looking for. I would recommend a good set-up on your guitar before installing p-ups for sustain.

Oh to answer SSS vs HSS...it is a personal choice. I like them both.

In a HSS Vs. SSS competition I would say...it depends on what floats your boat. :)

Sounds like you'd get use out of the humbucker in the bridge, so get the HSS. I personally prefer it SSS all the way!

IMO, a true strat is SSS, as per the original design. The sound of a strat is the single coil.

I would never get a strat wtih a humbucker. There are plenty of good guitars out there that are designed with humbuckers in mind ( some gibson variant for example, designed for humbuckers).

I, personally, am a HUGE supporter of the HSS format !
I own numerous Strats all with HSS formatting and I find them to be incredibly versatile.
I play in a copy band that covers a lot of ground (Allmans to Z.Z. Top) and it's really nice not to have to switch guitars when going from a MOUNTAIN song to a Hendrix song !

I never had any real love for the piercing, biting bridge pup of a Strat ! JMHO

I have a Strat with the HSS and I love it. But, I want a Strat with SSS.

If you want the humbucker sound, get a Gibson. If you want a Strat sound get a SSS. Two different guitars, two different uses and sounds = one happy player.

So, my recommendation? Get a HSS, SSS, and a Gibson.

For HB get SG or LP.

In this humble opinion, a Strat stops being a Strat when it has anything but SSS configuration.

Personal feeling is if you want gobs of different types of music from a single guitar, a Jazzmaster or Mosrite is the hot ride.

That said, Jerry McGee of The Ventures can get ANYTHING out of his Strat.

I totally agree with that. I don't want the ultimate versatile guitar. I'd get a Parker Fly or something that's made to be versatile. I want my strat to sound like a strat, period. Strats are already the most versatile stock guitars anyway, in my opinion. That's more than enough for me. If I want to do something different, I have humbucker guitars for that, with locking trems - whatever.

I picked up a Big Apple double humbucker and was really surprised how much it keeps the true quack sound of a SSS config. I bought it for the color and was going to switch it to SSS. Now I'm not so sure. I have always been a SSS in a strat believer. I'll play it for a while and see.

Call me a dinosaur, narrow minded, or whatever ! I don't care how many records the man sold or how allegedly influential his band is.....Billy Corgan DOES NOT deserve to have a signature model Stratocaster!!!
To be honest.....he a crappy player!!!

That is reserved for the player of the highest order...ie...Jimi, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, Eric Clapton/...ect......

What are they going to do: give a signature Stratocaster to any new wave/alternative knuckleneck just because they sell 5 million records!!

Meanwhile Joe Bonamassa had to go over to the Gibson camp PERMANENTLY (!!!) because Fender told him he didn't sell enough records to warrant a signature model.

Heck....Gibson gave him a signature Les Paul........GRRRRRR
