Just wondered whether people think the Fender specs of 4/64ths down to 5/64s was actually achievable without buzz/ tone loss.

I've experimented ALOT with bridge and truss rod adjustments to achieve this.

more than acheivable. I set mine at 3/64's to 3/32's on the bass side and suffer no buzz.

Please tell me how!!

I've tried varing degrees of front bow .2mm down .4 or so. The neck is good and straight with very litle vairiation in neck relief from one side to the other, in fact there is a slight increse in relief from the high E side to the low (by about .1mm), this should HELP set up by ging more room for the heavier strings to vibrate whilst keeping the high E side straighter, & thus more suited to single notes 'up' the neck.

I've tried flush and floating bridge on this strat too, a float seems to work better, with (remarkably) little or no loss of sustain!

The nut could come down a bit, but I'm tempted to get a pro to do that!

Apart from that I'm running out of ideas!

If you notice they give everyone the same book for your guitar no matter which model, be it a $200 guitar or Custom Shop. This is just a suggested generic guideline. I've got all of mine as low as possible without buzzing or fretting out. The same applies to pickup heights. Set it like you want it. I never even measure as I set it all by listening and feel. That book is a great starting point! Enjoy and have fun! Peace! :)

See Chet's post on pickup heights! It's a good thread!

First thing you have to determine is what is causing the buzz and why. There can be several causes. I get away with low action because i pick softly and spend a fair bit of time sorting frets/nuts out (even on highend guitars). Something if your talking about your malmsteen your going to struggle with, as we've discussed before.

I have been lucky and get some of mine extremely low too. Some guitars no matter what you do the action is going to be a little higher than you would like.

In some cases, although not all, pick attack can cause a guitar with low action to buzz for one player but not another. As nikininja mentioned a softer pick attack can allow a player to get away with lower action than if one were to really dig in with an aggressive attack. I prefer a higher action on my guitars and also play with a pretty heavy hand. My buddy has a strat that has very low action that he plays with zero buzz. When I pick up his guitar and play as I normally would virtually every string buzzes at every fret. If you're having difficulty getting your action where you want it without buzz try lightening your picking. You may get a result with that tactic.

Personally, 'like it low with 11s.

The tech has had in some cases to not only tweak the truss rod and balance brige, but cut or file nut and in some cases, file frets.

Every guitar is slightly different, as said eloquently earlier.
