I saw this in PG mag, looks interesting : (if you don't already have S-1 switching) :

The goal of running a neck/bridge combo is a good one, but I prefer the Lindy Fralin "blender pot" mod, which gives you a 100-sound Strat.

You end up with a master volume, master tone and a "blender" that let's you introduce as much or as little as you like of either the bridge pickup (WHen the neck or neck/middle positions are engaged) or the neck pickup (when the bridge or bridge/middle positions are engaged). You can buy a blender pot from Fralin or easily make your own by modding any stock potentiometer.

This wiring scheme give you max flexibility, and achieves a certain "stealth" quality I like... it leaves you with a normal looking Strat (not that I really care... my Strat has a microswitch sticking out of it already, but it engages an internal clean-boost preamp set to goose the guitar about 3db).

The Strat neck pickup with the bridge dialed in at about 50% or so is an awesome voice.

Mike Mr Chop is 100% correct. The blender pot mod is probably the best uninvasive mod for a strat that i've ever seen. I just use the neck tone pot it works great albeit backwards. When the pot is on 10 theres no neck pickup sound, when its on 0 neck pickup is on full.
Its very easy to wire too.

Hi Mike: I bet that's going to be a useful post for some folks here.

I have the S1 switch on a Strat: of the extra options that "all pickups on" setting is the one I really like (contrary to the experience of the writer of that article). I can't get the bridge+neck sound though. Curious to hear that one.

Sooner or later I believe I'll try the Gilmour switch mod. I have no visual objection to extra switches here and there.

Mind you, Chet and redmax did a really neat job with a version of the three switches approach the article mentions. The seven basic options, plus a row of in- out-of-phase possibilities too. And individual dual concentric tone and volume pots for each pickup as well. Very tidy circuitry!

Cheers - C

Thanks Ceri.

I tried to post to the article but kept getting an error message so I guess the rest of the world will never know.

I still have in the works the Robbie Robertson mod. Which I should actually be getting to in the next couple of days.

i just put my electronic mods in the other day and the new setup is quite versatile. It currently has a master vol, master tone and a midscoop with a center detent; 1 being scooped 5 neutral and 10 mid up. To make the setup even more versatile i opted for a push pull pot on the master tone to turn on the neck pup. So in bridge position i can get Bridge+neck tele like sound. Ultimately i think the mod is much better then the original 2 tone setup.

Although i just had the mod done and im still getting used to it, i think a good electronic mod makes your instrument feel and sound alot more like you ultimately want. It allows for a certain level of control over your tone that the stock setup may not.

So be it a blender pot, a midscoop, or anything else you can fathom up in your head, an electronic mod can sometimes be the key to really grabbing hold of the tone of your strat and keeping in check.

Cheers,
Jack
