I'm a big fan - I just got back from seeing them on Tuesday at the IZOD Center in NJ.

Branford Marsalis sat (stood really) in for most of the show - he was really good and Warren was very nice too.

The boys sounded really good - as Bob said, it's a work in progress.

I've seen them since 1969 - my first show was at the Filmore East, Janis Joplin was on the bill, my last show was at Giants Stadium in June of 1995 - Bob Dylan opened. The number of shows is well north of 200, possibly 300, I stopped counting many years ago

I've seen many bands play with them - they introduced me to lots of music - most of it not even close to being "Dead music" - I miss Jerry, Pig Pen and Keith and Brent and Vince.

Hey Gil, I was wondering when you were going to pick up on this thread. I just listened to the IZOD shows today, sounded great and a lot of positive feedback from folks at the show. I'm curious what auto-wah or envelope filter pedal Warren is using to get the cool Jerry/Mutron sound. Sounds pretty close.

I was just thumbing through my kid's latest Rolling Stone mag and there is a photo of the boys at a private meet and greet with the Prez in the oval office! Who woulda' thunk

I've been a dead head for just under two decades now. Managed to catch a few shows in the early 90's and on occasion managed to snap a pic or two.

To all the gear heads out there I picked up a really cool book last year that detailed the Grateful Dead's gear from the Warlocks to '95. I can't remember the name and can't find it right now as it's currently boxed up somewhere but it was an excellent read and very informative. It dealt with everything from amps to speakers to guitars to speaker cabinets and everything else. As most of yall know the GD were always trying new things with technology. Bear, Alembic, Matthews, Irwin, ect. were constantly pushing the envelope of new technology. Some of Phil's basses were insane with like 13 knobs on the thing and each string would have its own preamp. Crazy stuff. Then Jerry had the Travis Beam with the aluminum neck. Then the Irwins with the effects loops and GK-7 synth mounted in the guitars. Stuff that was very new was constantly being integrated into their shows. As a result they had some disasters but also came up with some really innovative ways of performing live music. If I can find that book I'll post the title. You may be able to search for it on Google and find it that way too.

I've never been to a grateful dead show but I love their music. I started liking them about two years ago when I heard China Doll. Ever since then I can't stop listening to them.

No, there is a China Doll - appears on From The Mars Hotel and some live recordings, like Reckoning - a very nice version.

Code:
China Doll

Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Jerry Garcia

A pistol shot at five o'clock
The bells of heaven ring
Tell me what you done it for
No I won't tell you a thing
