hi guys. i got a problem.
the truss rod in my 2005 custom shop classic player strat isn't turning any direction at all. i tried 3, and 4mm alan keys, but they didn't work, so i bought a 3.5mm one as well, but also no luck.
does anyone know which one it's supposed to be?
neck is straight and plays fine, but i just want to make sure that it will turn if i ever need to adjust it in the future.
thanks

I dont think he was making any assumption concerning the modded nut or tuners.

Hi lunarstrat: you're right, I don't know your guitar.

On the other hand, I do have some experience with trussrods and I have discovered that metric and imperial allen keys are not interchangeable. Most of my Fenders take imperial keys, and I expect yours does too.

However, I also have a Korean Lite Ash Tele, and to my surprise my Fender issue imperial trussrod key won't work on it. Luckily I have a set of metric ones too and found the one that fitted. Why the Korean factory should be using trussrods with metric sockets unlike the rest of Fender I don't know...

Even though there is a tiny difference between the three keys you tried it may well be just enough to stop them from fitting. I suggest you either try a set of imperial sized allen keys, or just email Customer Care and ask them which is the correct size for your neck:

Good luck - C

thanks. i'll definately try the imperial sets. i own a masterbuilt 54' and a ej strat as well, but they both have vintage style truss rods which are placed at the neck heels; these could be adjusted with any screw driver. much simpler/better design to be honest!! but i do like the idea of having a truss rod at the head stock, as i don't have to remove the neck all the time. i'm a bit surprised that you have so many strats with this type of truss rod!! as most strats i know of come with the 'screw driver type'
anyway cheers!!

I've a custom classic too. Its a biflex truss rod in them if its in the center position then it would give the feeling of being broken. The guitar is pretty much a vneck'd deluxe or standard depending on pickup config.

Anyway get over to the customshop section of the forum and check the customshop lifetime care program. That shoud allieviate some of the w.orry

yeah, custom classics are great too, but mine is a slightly different model. it's custom classic 'players' model which was discontinued slightly earlier than the custom classics (i believe?)
anyway i really do hope that i haven't worn off/messed up the thread already, you can see on the pics, the finish around the hole is cracked; cos i applied some brute force as i got frustrated. i'll keep you informed. :D

That chipping on the truss surround looks like your allen key isnt long enough. Note the one that comes with the guitar is about 1.5" either side of the corner.

the key is long enough i think. i don't think the length is the issue here. when i put 3mm/4mm in, i don't 'feel' anything grabing on the thread, since 3mm one is too small, it does go into the thread, but it turns in mid air, 4mm is too big, so it does not even fit into the thread, so i thought 3.5mm must be the one. untill finding that the 3.5mm one does go in when i use the ball end or a la 'rescue side', but would not turn at all. so perhaps i'm looking for the imperial one sized somewhere between 3mm and 3.5mm. i'll get a set tomorrow perhaps and let you know. i got this one on ebay (used), and i was only given one alan key unfortunately, for adjusting the saddles. cheers

hi guys.
i just bought the imperial set, and the one which says '1/8' fits perfectly, and is working as smoothly as it should.
i went to a local tool shop and saw those two sets (metric & imperial) and i did not understand that they were two different kinds of animal.
i just thought they were in different colour, so i picked up a red set, and did not know the yellow ones had completely different measurements all together!!
thank you so much!
now i just need to get those chips filled up somehow...
best,
ian
