Its soundblock plasterboard. I've built cinema's out of the stuff. 3 layers and a layer of 19mm as a base. It still needs isolating off the stud to acheive its best performance. I'll dig a vid out tommorow mate.

We cut the stuff with a stanley knife. The average 15mm board weighs 70kg 12.5 are about 58kg

Are you sure we are talking about the same stuff here? You need to be the incredible Hulk to cut this stuff with a hand tool, never mind a Stanley blade.

Yeah mate its the same stuff. Were a pig ignorant lot us english builders. Theres also a german system called fermacell thats heavier/denser. It weighs in at 8 stone for a 10mm thick 8x4 board and has no paper surround. Its just crushed gypsum, cement and water compressed together.

I reckon it'd make a great strat body. Loads of sustain  .

Hi guys: much easier to just buy up a truckload of ear defenders at a discount price and hand those out to the neighbors when the complaints come in:

That German board sounds like pretty serious stuff, thanks for filling in the gaps.

If I were to make a strat out of any building material, it would be a semi-hollow made of Corian. I wonder how much that sucker would weigh.

I did consider making a plaster mold for one. Just lay a thick piece of maple along the center of the wet stucco to fix the neck, bridge and pickups to. The beauty of fermacell is that you can get a solid fix onto it. Use grabber screws and its just like pine.

Yea, the room isn't 100% soundproof, but it does just sound like someone playing a stereo from outside. Not one neighbor complaint in almost 10-years now.

But as one poster said, the Auralex is way too expensive. I think they are absolute thieves for asking the price they do, and I don't agree with it being worth every penny in this application. There are an enormous number of bands all over the Country that either hang carpet or do this. And have been for decades. Why do you think that is? Not everyone has $10,000 to soundproof a room. I live in the Ghetto.

So while many of you guys are technically correct, and your suggestions are good info. And I probably shouldn't be advocating doing a room this way. I personally just don't have the money for what you are suggesting.

Is the sound a little dead? Yea, but not totally. It sounds decent in there. Not perfect, but it doesn't have to be to practice. It serves it's purpose well enough. I get no complaints from the band or my neighbors.

This has been my practice space for almost 10-years now, so how much of is risk is it really? I should buy flood insurance too, but I haven't ever done that.

I think I'll just continue to take my chances. Be saucy. Live on the edge. Stick it to the man. Ghetto fabulous style. Not too worried about it.
