Ah-ha! A surprisingly quick search has found the guitar in question for sale for €980.00 on the website of a shop in Italy, right up on the Swiss border:

http://www.berdymusic.eu/prodotti/strum ... a_cfm.html

Holgmann, if that is the seller you are talking to then I expect it is legit and there is just a misunderstanding about the serial number. I suppose NO556180 might just concieveably be a written abreviation of the Italian "numero 556180" - though that stretches the imagination somewhat.

On the other hand, if that Italian shop is not who is trying to sell you the guitar - well then now you know where they stole the photos from...

If in any doubt, that identical model is available in Germany for €999 at Thomann:

http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_america ... rw_cfm.htm

And knowing Germany I bet you can find it cheaper than that, too.

And if you like shopping abroad, here it is in Britain for €891, a hundred Euros less:

EDIT: spelling... d'uh!

Since when is the Euro legal currency on your Island?

Haha! Well, to be fair, back on that page I wasn't claiming to be quoting The Mikado from memory (only ever seen it once). No false pretences...

Google can be misleading, too. I thought I knew Dead Shrimp Blues and Google seemed to confirm it. But neither I nor Google spotted that Big Jay wasn't quoting Robert Johnson's version of the song...

Huh? The Euro - along with all fully convertable currencies - is legal tender in my land, and yours. 'Course, we tend not to use most of them for buying a newspaper in the corner shop, but only because the shop doesn't want the hassle.

Ceri,

I suppose legally that is true but my experience has been different.

I travel to Europe every 6-8 weeks and everytime I go from the continent to the UK the make me change from Euro to Pound. Even at Heathrow they won't take Euro.

How do you check out the authenticity of a serial number? I had a guitar exchanged recently, the serial number of the replacement seems to have the wrong number of digits, according to the 'date your strat' part of this Fender website?

Hi Bruno690: well that's strange.

If you check into a large hotel in London you'll likely be able to pay the bill in any currency you choose. A small hotel, probably not.

Likewise, a stroll around Oxford Street, Bond Street, Regent Street, etc will find umpteen shops where multiple currencies are accepted - obviously, those that are well frequented by foreign visitors. Whether or not currencies other than the Pound are accepted has purely to do with the banking arrangements the business cares to set up: legality ain't an issue.

Similarly, a couple of visits ago I found the Kimberly Hotel in New York perfectly happy to be paid with some Sterling travellers' cheques I happened to have.

Incidentally, last year in London we officially passed the point where Russian visitors outnumbered American. No doubt a temporary effect to do with the economy, but quite a turn up for the books for anyone old enough to remember the Cold War. Nowadays the sight of Russians paying for goods in shops using huge bricks of currency has ceased to arouse surprise...

Cheers - C

Hotels are different, they post anything in whatever currency you choose. But at most shopping establishments, I have never seen that.

I am seeing Russian tourists every where (long live Perestroika). Heck @ 1 1/2 years ago it was 2:1 - Dollar to Pound. Now that the dollar has improved, you'll probably see more Americans.

You might appreciate this...I was in London on July 4 a couple of years ago. Going through customs, one of your Police wished me a Happy 4th of July. I asked him if that holiday was celebrated over in the UK. He said, "No, we just remember that date because it is when some piss ant little country left us."

Haha! I spend half my time in a little rural village in the South West: there's an American couple who live there and leave us all in no doubt when it's 4th July...

Obviously, regarding currency, we're not in the Euro zone, so you can't pay for taxis, restaurants, etc etc using Euros. Any more than you can in America.

But I'm surprised you're not finding it more widely accepted - depending where you go. For example, as soon as the Euro started Marks & Spencer decided to take payment in Euros if asked. Many others similarly.

My wife has a business which makes sales all over the world, and has banking facilities in several currencies. Sometimes she repatriates those funds to Sterling, but some of it stays in those currencies and gets spent again as and when. Saves on exchange fees.

Clearly, that guitar shop I linked to is making signinficant sales into Europe and has set themselves up accordingly. Looking at comparitive pricing, I can see why...

Cheers - C

I hardly know you and you are already calling me a liar? :P
He said it. After a flight that long it was very funny, I nearly bust out laughing.

I have no difficulty in imagining that policeman said that. I'm quietly surprised you asked him whether we celebrate that date though...

Also, a friend of mine claims upon being asked if he had a criminal record when entering Australia to have replied, "No, I didn't know it was still a requirement." My, he must have been popular...

BTW, Adrian: http://www.guitardaterproject.org/ is the answer to your previous question. It's not infallible, though.
