Hi,

lately I've gone out to shop for a strat and here in Israel there isn't much variety so I just tried about 5-6 American standard stratocasters...
they were all relatively new. first one was a 02', second 04' and the rest were 06'-07'.
some had a maple fretboard, some a rosewood one. some made of ash and some of alder. some had 0.10 strings on, some had 0.09...

the thing is I ended up with the money in my pocket and without a guitar gig-bag on my bag since all the strats were such a disappointment.
the neck is a bit thinner than I like - and so is the sound.
well, I can compromise about the neck... but the sound had something missing in it. don't get me wrong - it's still a strat sound with the bell tone but it's way too thin. for example it sound really crappy in comparison to SRV's sound or Knopfler's...

so... what should I do?
which strat to buy?
will it help to swap the pickups, what pickups should I put?

Thanks in advance,
Yaniv :)

My first question is: What ampflier were you playing them through?

Good Question, don't always blame the guitar you know.
Good amp, use more bass, midlle and some output-tube overdrive.
.010'' strings and maybe the pickups a little closer to the strings ?

Try it through a good tube amp. I like EL-34s, but any tube amp should give you a good idea of the guitars strengths/weaknesses.
