Can it be played?
Yes, but certainly not so much in the traditional sense.
It is much more demanding of finger positioning than a fretted guitar, much like a fretless Bass.
To nail a chord, my fingers need to be on or quite close to the fretline, making it not so practical for chord playing - at least for me. I'm sure there are others that have mastered fretless guitars and they can do wondrous things and coax sounds that are very enjoyable.
The fun part for me is playing with a small finger bow that gives a more fluid slide sound than with a fretted guitar.
I will admit it is not for everyone and that it is not the main guitar I play but it is an enjoyable, fun and unusual guitar nonetheless.

Hi again Flashback: would you show us your finger bow, please?

Also, I'm assuming you use that fretless for slide as well, right? If so, is it giving you a significant advantage over playing slide on a fretted neck?

Cheers - C

Hey Flashback - thanks! I've never tried one of those: I need to look into it.

Very helpful:

heh... I was thinking about fretless guitars just the other day. I think it was because I had King Crimson's Sleepless on, and I seem to remember from the liner notes of the original album I used to have (long gone now, I'm afraid) that Adrian Belew used a fretless guitar on that song. One of my all time favourites... equal parts charm and menace. Got me wondering...

That's even more helpful. Thank you again!

BTW: regarding fretless guitars, I notice that Bumblefoot (Ron Thal), who is currently playing with Guns n' Roses, sometimes uses a fretless Vigier S-type guitar. I don't know his playing: something to look into...

Well,
I decided to get to go for it
Ordered a Warmoth 24" Oak with Ebony Faceboard Corian Nut Locking Tuners Abalone Dots
Also a Warmoth 24" Ebony with Ebony Faceboard Graphtec Nut Locking Tuners Abaline Dots

Now, I've got to get to work getting the other parts for the Strat body.

Will post pics when it's up and running - probably at least three or four weeks
