I have four of my guitars out all the time - one in a "string swing", one in a wall hanger, and two on the floor in stands. Is it bad to have one hanging by the neck? it seems like it may put stress on the neck bolts. In the pic below, the brown mustang is the one I'm worried about, but they all go into different places at different times - the one I'm playing most goes in the floor stand.

I would think that hanging by the headstock is the most "stress free" way to store a guitar. The neck is hanging straight and not against something, so there's no stress on the neck. You'll notice that most guitars in music shops are hanging. But the bottom line is, if a guitar is worth a sh*t, it should be able to withstand a bit of neck stress anyway.

All of my guitars/basses hang up all the time. No problems here.

I would say the strings themselves put the most tension on the neck. I cant see hanging you guitar like that creating any problems. Maybe if it hangs for 100 years or something without being touched.

I believe the best way to store a Stratocaster for a long period of time is a molded case.

I agree with bjk. Guitar shops hang their guitars and basses by their necks for extended periods of time until they're sold, or they move them. Your guitars should be fine.

Fender's are tough, they can take it. Now if it were a Gibson, I'd be worried. J/K

Thanks for the reassurance - I didn't think there was a problem, but I wanted to be sure

The only thing I worry about concerning stands or hangers is if your guitar is finished with nitro. Nitro finishes have a bad reaction over time with rubber, plastic etc. It can cause damage! The rest of the finishes are fine with any material.

I use "String Swings" and have no issues there.

Chet, did you see that booklet that was posted the other day with a posters new guitar. It was all about protecting finishes and specifically mentioned extra precaution with nitro finished guitars. I'm like you though as I've had no problems but I take extra care with my Gilmour! :)

No, I did not see that.

I have been hanging many different brands of guitars for almost 10 years with no issues. String Swings are fabulous!!!

I hear you Chet. You're always right but I think the book was in a post about a new 57 Strat and it contained a lot of beautiful pic. ,including this book opened to that page. I've never seen a Fender book like that before.
Oh well, My Gilmour is either in its G&G case or in my loving hands/arms! I see no harm in hanging guitars though like you said!

I've tried finding it Chet but can't do it. I've just never seen a booklet on taking care of finishes in with the rest of the case candy before. That's why it sticks out in my mind. I give up looking, maybe some other member remembers seeing it or the OP.
Have a great day Chet!! 8) :)
