Hi eyerish: it has been different over the years. HSH seems very common these days - but you'd always need to check to be sure.

I thought most newer models had the "swimming pool" route. My '05 MIM Floyd Rose model has it. But my '89 USA has the HSH route.

Why would a Mexican Standard be routed for a humbucker? The traditional Strat pickup design is single-single-single. Alterations to the Standard design yes but I don't see why the Standard itself would have it.

I think it might be because the Mexican Standard is one of the most popular guitars for modifying, and lots of people put a humbucker into it.

Including Fender themselves. Here's the Mexican Standard HSS Strat:

Putting an HSS or HSH route under the hood means they can use the body for which ever pickup configuration they happen to be building that day.

However, Classic '50s and '60s Reissues have SSS routing, to be period correct.

pardon my ignorance, but what, in layman's terms, is a "swimming pool" route?

It's a route where there is a larger rectangular cavity routed for the three pickups instead of smaller individual routes for each pickup. It resembles the shape of a swimming pool when you think about it.
