Hello forum,

I have only been playing a few months, but I absolutely love the instrument. I recently picked up a 2006 MIM HSS for really cheap. I love playing the thing, it's a step up from the affinity even with my small amount of experience I noticed a difference. Here's the deal, I want to try to get more of a vintage sound. WHile I practice mainly blues, I love surf and rockabilly music. What kind of pickups or pedals are there that would go in an HSS but give me that sound. Any help would be appreciated. I just want to find out what my options are and I don't particularly trust salesman. So I put it to you.

a compressor the danelectro surf n turf is cheap and decent enough for the £20 it costs.
A tremolo
a reverb
a delay.
Really you should worry more about playing rather than effects

for pickups look at reissue pickups 57/62 depending on where they are made you can find them on ebay for $30-220. for pedals a vox or dunlop wah wah and a old ibanez tube screamer will do you well for vintage tone

Thanks for the response. Honestly, this isn't something I was going to do immediately, I was just curious as to my options as it is my nature. Other than practice, I want to know what goes where, and why. On a side note nikininja; the company I work for is based in Boldon, UK. Hope all is well over there.

Bolton maybe never heard of boldon. It sounds like something from a explicit movie.

I got my best guitar in bolton at a very good shop called harker and howerth.

On effects if that old vintage sound is what your after the effects you need will be based largely on your amp. What amp do you use? Really dont worry about pickups yet. Its just not worth going down that road until you've developed your ear to a point where you will appreciate them. After all they cost a lot for magnets with wire wrapped round.
For that old fender amp you need a compressor to fatten the sound up. Tremolo and reverb both sound great for the old surf/country sounds too. If your amps got drive/distortion use that instead of mucking about with a drive pedal. A half decent compressor set properly will improve the worst amplifier drive/distortion.

I will start by using the distortion on my amp. My neighboors will thank you. And thanks for the info, Make it to Arizona and the first pint is on me.
