Do you have a pedal of some sort? If you do and it is a basic, BOSS-style stompbox, you need three things: power, and two cables. The power can come from a battery or a 9-volt adapter that plugs into the pedal and then the wall. Once you have this organized, plug a cable into your guitar and the other end into the pedal's "input" or "instrument" jack. Then run a second cable from your pedal's "output" or "amplifier" jack; this should be plugged into the "input" jack on your amp. Then play and turn the pedal on or off with your foot.

And make sure all volumes are on 0 before you plug or unplug cables.
