I'm thinking of going with taller frets on my EJ Strat. For those of you that have refretted maple necks; how did the finished product come out? Were there chips in the original finish? Was the finish matched? How did the edges of the finger board come out?

Just a bump up. Looking for info from those of you that have refretted. Is it better just to get another neck? Or to refret the one I have? Thanks....

What is your motivation for the bigger frets?

A lot of the time I have trouble fretting certain chords becasue my fingers are hitting wood. On the guitars I've tried with taller frets this isn't an issue.

Well I love the guitar, and the body and pick ups are part of the Equation. The feel of the neck is good too, with the exception of the shallow frets. So, what I'm thinking of doing is finding a Fender neck on ebay that has taller frets. An SRV? Warmoth? I'm hesitant to mess with the EJ neck. So, I'm leaning towards finding a replacement. But, if anyone out there that has refretted, was it worth it?

That's a fantastic guitar that *might* be worth something some day if it's in good shape. I would definitely just look for a different neck to throw on there as opposed to modifying the existing neck. Nitro finished maple boards are a fret job's worst nightmare. It will never, ever be the same.

That's what I thought. I really appreciate your input. Plus, you're right it's a great guitar and keeping the stock parts, someday, may be worth it.....

Sounds to me like a scallop neck may be the ticket! Probably no more than a refret. You will love it. I think at the very least a new neck with Jumbo's. Probably still not cost any more than a refret.

Yeah I would also recommend another neck ... so you have everything you want in the guitar :)

Unless you've been playing the guitar 18 hours a day for the last 3 years i cant see you having worn the frets down. The height difference between jumbo and medium jumbo is next to nothing. Perhaps the problem could be a technique issue. Either way a re-fret is vastly cheaper than a new neck. One carried out by a competent luthier shouldnt be at all visible when finished.

The problem is that the EJ is made from the factory with nitro sprayed over the frets then it's sanded off so the base of the frets are sealed to the neck. I can see no way of getting the old frets off without ruining that.

Thats a longstanding thing with fender. Gibson even paint the binding over the fret ends. It can be got through neatly by scoring either side of the fret much the same with nuts too.

For years I thought it was a technique issue. But, the difference in height from the medium jumbo to the 6105 is enough of a difference for me that it makes some chords easier to play. Don't get me wrong, the EJ is a great guitar. I love it just the way it is. It's just that I think a small tweak like the frets could make it even better for me.

This entire dialog has convinced me that I will just get another guitar that is set up already with the 6105 or 6100 frets. This will keep the EJ intact.
