Hello everyone! I currently have a deluxe player's strat with an ash body and I have been thinking about getting a strat with an alder body. Can anyone tell me what the tonal difference is between an ash and an alder body? I can't seem to tell the difference myself. Thanks!

the widely held opinion is that there would be very little difference except weight maybe.

Also Ash can vary so much more from one to the other. Alder is more consistant.

Musicman....I'd point out to you that I didnt recommend one wood over another. Its your decision to make. With that, I have only three pieces of advice....

1) Decide how much your care about the details. If you do care....
2) Do your homework. Educate yourself about the science behind guitars and guitar acoustics, materials and components and their implications, and how to assemble/set-up your guitar.
3) Decide what you want your guitar to sound like and how you can best make it sound that way within your budget.

Then play it until your fingers bleed.

Thanks BigJay! Lately I have been checking out the details to guitars, (and yes I do care alot about details, at least when it comes to music,), and I have pretty much decided that alder is the right choice for me. From what I've read and heard, alder has a richer, warmer tone that ash and it has more sustain, which is very important to me. However, good alder usually costs more than ash, but because I care so much about my tone I'll shell out the extra bucks. Thanks once again for your advice!
