I don't know the reason why they discontinued those , but they do look really cool if there were new ones today I'd buy one :)

I know what you mean. I own two HRR strats, which were manufactured when the HMs were.

If I had to take an educated guess, I would say they stopped selling them because heavy metal gave way to grunge. Which coincidently was around the mid 90's when they stopped making HMs.

I've heard superstrats are making a comeback (ie. charvel san dimas models, ibanez rg reissues). Apperantly there is a market for them now since us older guys who used to listen to metal can now afford to buy them.

I would love it if Fender would reissue the HMs or HRRs. I would go out and buy one right away.

I believe that was the model name "HM Strat". It has a very distinct look for a strat. No pickguard. The headstock was painted black. There were several versions of it. Some had a Kahler Spyder and some had a Floyd Rose. Some said "Strat by Fender" on the headstock. Others said "Fender Strat". Some were MIA, some were MIJ, and some were a combinatin MIA/ MIJ. It had a slim neck compared to most strats. You can google "HM strat" and click on images to see one.

It's ashame that the HM was discontinued. However maybe fender will come out with a new modelin the next little while as the metal scene is back in full swing and many metal artists are opting to go for super strats now.

If you look at the names on the top of the heavy shredder lists, you get people like Satriani, Vai, Kirk Hammet, Herman Li. They all play super strats because they tend to be a more agreeable guitar to shred with.

I always wanted one back in the late 80's. If I could find one in good condition fo rthe right price, I'd still buy one.

I did find one for the right price, and bought it. Mine is a 1990 MIA model in hot pink. It has the original pickups yanked out in favor of a set of EMG 81/SA units and a pre-amp booster. Sweet guitar for $212!!! The shop I bought it from thought it was a cheap Japanese model, but after some investigating, found that mine is Made in USA. I am very happy, as the pickups and booster cost $200Image

You know I'm going back and forth with one I have here. I called Fender to see if they knew where I could find a pickguard for my HM Squier. But the guy said they didn't make the HM series with pickguards. Here's a pic if the body.

Image

Looking at it, I still think it's an HM. And I do see Fender HMs on ebay with pickguards from time to time. Even when I see pics of the backsides of them they look identical to the one I have.

But I finally said screw it. I'm not custom ordering one, or making one myself.

So I had this Westone body here with a neck the exact same size, however someone put a Kahler bridge on it and it was too tall for the guitar. The action was too high. I took the Kahler off, put the Floyd bridge and the neck from the Squier on it, and here it is:

My super sleek Squier HM. I put a Dimarzio Steve's Special in it. The other two pickups are just dummied. I only use the bridge pickup. The Humbucker is wired to one of the toggles as an on/off switch, not the 5-way.

Put it together over the weekend. Played it last night and couldn't be happier. Awesome guitar!!
