Just curious if any of you have the Jimmie Vaughn Stratocaster. I think I'm gonna get one and use it as a spare guitar since I already have a spare scalloped neck to throw on it.

I'll do some pickup and bridge/block mods as well to tweak it some. As long as I don't get a really crappy piece of wood it should be okay.

I wouldn't buy a new one. If you can get a deal on an older one then go for it but then improvements made to it are really not worth the price hike over a regular Mexican strat, especially if you plan on modifying it!

Correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure that the changes are: Tex-Mex pickups, a tone pot for the bridge and Jimmy Vaughan's name.

You gotta be careful about buying used guitars. You have no idea where it's been or how many weeks or months it's been sitting out on a guitar stand exposed to the elements or what the body wood is like.

At least when you buy new you can return it for a full refund. Plus it's new so you don't have to worry about where the guitar has been and nicks and dents and burns and everything else.

those are actually very nice guitars.
if you want it for spare.
just get a used mim body/w loaded pg w/tm pus(cost about 80 bucks 4 set) from ebay/stratosphere, pop in that scalloped neck.

I did that awhile back and it didn't turn out very good sound-wise. Either I got a lemon of a body or the zinc block that I was using really made the guitar sound scrappy and trashy. It wasn't the pickups cuz I put in Area 61's.

I was strongly considering finding a used MIJ 57 Reissue but they are very hard to find here in America. I did locate a few in Japan and one in the U.K. but shipping and customs and it's really an ugly bag of worms going to those lengths.

I really wish a guy could buy new MIJ Strats here.

Maybe where you live there are fantastic guitars in pawn shops but around here not so. I just bought a used Marshall JCM 900 off Craigslist assuming it would sound great. All tube Marshall right? Wrong. It sounded tinny and overly bright with no depth or bottom end. In fact my AVT50 blows it away.

Same thing can happen with used guitars if you can't play them first which you can't do on Ebay. And many musicians don't care for their instruments at all. I do. But I'm in the minority.

I'm not completely opposed to buying used axes. But I feel caution must be used. Let the buyer beware.

The J.V. Strats seem to have increased value lately!

Turn that jcm900 up to 8, push the mid up to 10, bass 6/7 and treble at 2 or 3. Then you will hear why slash, hammet, kisser and bones all used them. Modern Marshall unlike peavey and mesa and most amp manufacturers use a very interactive tone circuit. The way you adjust one control affects the others. Keep the presence at around 3 unless your in a very low ceilinged room with 80+ people in it.

You cant buy a marshall and play it at 2.

If you are going to change the neck, pickups, bridge and other mods anyway why not just get a MIM standard or high end Squire?
Looks like you might save a few bucks.

And a chunky V neck wich imo is much more comfortable than the standard MIM neck, It also has vintage tuners.

No kidding. With a bunch of time on my hands, I went to a bunch of pawn shops looking for some deals last week. There weren't any. All of the Fender MIAs were at least $900, and the MIMs were at least $300. And this was for some beat up guitars, too. In fact there was a white Gibson Les Paul Custom (CS) that was played to death, beat up, and looked like hell. I was actually interested in it unitl they said they wanted $3000.

I bought the JV strat a couple years ago and the neck was crap on every one I tried. Wouldn,t stay in tune. So I put a RW neck from a 60s mim and rocket fire pu in the neck and middle and a semore dunkin hot rails in the bridge and I love it now. Its one of the strats I won,t part with.
