I play mostly Foo Fighters and ACDC. I would really like to be able to play some Nickelback but my guitar cant get the right sound for it. What would be the best Fender Strat for that type of music?[/code]

You don't play a band because your guitar can't get the right sound? Wow, some people are picky!

Anyway, focus more on your amp and pedals..

How much do you want to spend?

Mexican Standards are a good choice

Although you can usually find them used for around $300 USD.

Go to your guitar shop and play though! Try other brands too,,that way you can discover the reason people love fender so much =)

In your spot I'd see what I could do for a used Fender MIM Deluxe Double Fat strat with a floyd. That'd be sick.

Black one. These things are serious rock machines. Especially for as raw a sound as AC/DC or Foo's.

Get any Strat that feels good to you, then pick up a Damage Control pedal with dual tubes...you'll be amazed!

Blackstar makes some really nice tube distortion pedals that might do the trick, if you can't quite get there. I picked one up the other day and was very impressed with it. Mine is the HT-Dual, with two channels to choose from. It cost about $200 from GC, though there might be other cheaper options. (This thing is built like a tank!)

Really, I would expect that you could get most any sound you want out of a Strat. Admittedly, it is a bit thinner than the typical humbucker sound. Maybe a new amp is what you need - I'm sure there are plenty of suggestions in that part of the forum.

I'm using a Mexican made Strat myself, though I just removed the HSS setup for a SSS setup with Fender Hot Noiseless pickups. I was more interested in the guitar sounding "Strat-like" for the things that it does so well. I've got my Les Paul with humbuckers for when I want to get down and dirty. I really like the setup I put into this one.

It depends on your budget as to what would be suggested. The MIM's are a great value, so you might look there. Otherwise, there are quite a few to choose from as some of the above posts mentioned.

David

I would suggest the Highway One HSS. I can get some killer metal tones out of mine.

I would also suggest the Highway 1 Stratocaster. Play both the HSS and SSS configuration. See which one you like best.

Also for Metal, play the Floyd Rose Stratocaster if you are into dive bombs.

Sounds to me like you'd be best off with a strat with a humbucker (as everyone's saying)... you can certainly get just about any sound you can imagine out of the standard single-coil setup, but it would take more tweaking than you'd probably care for if what you mostly want to do is plug in and rock out. And there's nothing wrong with that! Plus, it's not as if that humbucker is going to prevent you from playing other stuff.

I think you'd be better off getting a traditional SSS stratocaster -- or even a telecaster -- for the simple reason that eventually you will want to play other stuff and the traditional pickup layouts are traditional for a reason: they work and they're versatile. I like the idea of a Mexican one; they're relatively inexpensive when used (or even new) and are good quality instruments that will last you a long time.

It might be worth looking into a good amplifier too. That will do wonders for your tone.

I use a roadhouse strat with Texas specials. mines a 97 American, but I checked out one of the new Mexicans and they rock just as hard. Your amp and maybe some pedals will get you there. Strats will do the job. Its the downline if you will(amp and such)
STRATS ROCK,got my first one 36 years ago and never looked back.OH YEA!
