I just bought a new Eric Johnson Strat. It plays great and sounds killer. The only problem is that if I'm not touching the strings, it's got an annoying buzz, or humm. I noticed that it's quiet until I pick the instrument up. If I hold it away, it's quiet. If I hold it close to me, it buzzes.

So I put it in the stand, and moved my hand around on the back of the body. With my hand behind the trem springs or pickups, it's quiet. I found that it only buzzes when my hand gets precisely behind the switch/vol/tone controls!

Any Ideas?

Is you're amp earthted? or maybe a loose earthwire connection.

If you add more shielding under the pickguard, this buzz will go away. It's because your body has an electrical charge (from static electricity) and it is picked up by your guitar's electronics. I have the same thing happening with my guitars, and it goes away if I ground my body by touching any metal part of the guitar (strings, bridge, etc.).

Thanks, guys.
I added a continuous aluminum foil shield inside the pickup cavities, and inside the control cavity. Then attached a wire from the foil to the ground wire that goes to the trem spring bracket. The shielding eliminated 99% of the humm. I mean, with the vol and tone controls at 10, it's barely audible. It really sounds incredible now at any tone setting from pure clean to distorted. It took about 3 hours from string removal to tuning the new strings up. I'd recommend it to anyone with a noisy strat.
