I have read where sometimes people have problems with S1 switches.

My '04 Deluxe I just got would cut out if I touched the volume knob. So I gave it a shot of electronics cleaner/lubricant.

That worked for a couple days, then it started again. So, Gave it another shot of cleaner/lube. It works OK, but I can tell there is more play in the pot than there shoud be.

It was a used guitar, so there is no warrantee.

I read where Fender wont sell just the S1 switch, so I don't know what to do.

Hi shredhed: also, be aware that the guitar being beyond its warranty merely means you can't get the work done for free. But you can pay for a repair.

Take it to an Authorised Fender Service Center and they can fix/replace the switch, ordering new parts from the manufacturer if they don't have them in stock.

Cheers - C

If the extra play is significant then its a new switch. I wouldnt want to solder one in the lugs are next to nothing and the risk of scorching the pcb is high simply because of the close proximity of the lugs to each other as well as the board. I'd go with no stronger than a 5watt iron. Not the best option for fender pickup wire.

My recent purchase has noisy everything. Switch cleaner and repeated rapid manipulation of the part is the only way to go. You need to get the cleaner in there and destroy the muck by operating the part. It breaks the muck down to the point its not a problem. It will build up again over time though.

I'll try to work some more lube into the pot. The guitar is cherry even though it's 4 or 5 years old. It looks like it's spent the last 4 years in its case. So, it can't be worn out. It must be either a new pot (as mentioned earlier) or it's just dried out from lack of use.

I'm hoping it only needs some more oil/cleaner. I really don't like mucking around on the electronics an Americam made guitar.

If the guitar has been hardly played it could still be corrosion in the pot. I just bought a anniversary deluxe that was kept in storage and has suffered quite a bit of rust getting on it.

I'm starting to think that is what happened.

Well, I found out some of the problem. It was that the knob was a tad loose on the shaft, and while I was prying the split shaft open I broke off one side.

I now have a new one off evilbay on the way. It's for the better though. I would nefver have been satisfied with the old one the way it was acting.

I glued the part I broke off back on (believe it or not), managed to get the knob back on with the push button back in the middle of it all, sort of holding everything together.

It works for the time being, but I had no idea how fragile the split shafts were on those S1s. I've been tweeking guitat electronics for years and never had a problem, but on the S1 the middle of the shaft is bored out, so there just isn't as much mettal there to be that strong.

I did notice that on this guitar ('04) the pot is aluminum, but the new ones I saw on ebay for sale are a brass color. Hopefully this is an improvement for strengths sake.

Also I did notice that the inside of the knob is not knurled like the shaft is. No wonder the knob wobbles on the shaft.

Hey Fender. You need to fix this
