Hi Bigjay,
I actuallywas able to track that serial number and show that number corresponding to a model 010-7400-732 AM STD STRAT RW BSB W/C
it appears to have been produced Jan 1995 and shipped to a dealer in the southern states shortly thereafter. These did not come with Locking tuners.....so obviously if this is the same guitar...and it appears to be...then it is not all original..
Hope that helps a bit.
Best,
rob

Do all strats that are made in the US, have 'made in U.S.A.' marked somewhere on them?

I had a malmsteen strat briefly, it did not have made in USA on it, and come to think of it, the neck plate was bare, no 'F' or 'Fender' marked on it it at all.

Was it made in Mexico, was it a fake??

Could it have been the Japanese model? You're in the UK, aren't you, Adrian? Used to be ready availability of many Japanese Fenders in Britain till not so long ago.

Sadly, that's all changed...

This website (based in Scotland) is still listing Malmsteen Sigs for sale. Though take care: I tried hard and failed to procure a Strat from them. Difficult times, importwise...

It had a US serial number on the backof the neck, also it had deep scallops, I believe the MIJ has shallower, that also tend not to go right up to the frets, ie a little 'shelf' of unscalloped board on either side of the fret, a mm or 2 wide.

I'm pretty gutted that a model so expensive should be assembled in Mexico, along with all the cheapies!!

My malmsteen has gone back to the shop, and on to Fender, I'll let you know what happens. I'm hoping for a replacement guitar or neck, and not just a fretjob, that will cause probs of the neck twists further!!

Excellent! Sounds like you really did have a warped neck then. As you say, if the timber's moving there's no knowing when or where it might stop. Replacement is the only viable course. An perfect demonstration of what the warranty is there for.

Good luck with the next one.

BTW: you could ask Customer Services about the "made in..." issue. I presumed Sigs were made in USA unless otherwise stated. I don't think it has the slightest bearing on the quality of the end product though. I wouldn't be remotely bothered about it.

Hi BigJay: yep, we went all round the houses with this and it turns out you had it right at the start. I'm sure you were right about it being alder too.

Bob's Voice From Above is always handy, isn't it?

Admirable.

But when we do get things right it's secretly very nice to have it confirmed from an unimpeachable source, isn't it?

The kudos is yours.
