Should the stings on the guitar be level? Right above the pickguard, the strings are not level. Here is a picture of what I need help with.

The gold part that is boxed in red is what i need help with.

Why are some of the little things pushed forward and some back and also some are pushed higher and some lower. My A string is higher than me E. I noticed there is a little allen wrench socket on them. What do I do?

If you don't understand why the saddles (the little gold pieces with the Allen-head bolts) are all in different positions relative to the bridge, then you shouldn't do anything except take it to a guitar technician and tell him you want it set up.

If you look straight at the guitar face, each saddle sits at a different position to properly intonate the string, so it plays in tune (more or less) along the length of the string. If you look across the face of the guitar, the saddles won't be level because most technicians will set up the guitar for a consistent action from string to string... therefore, the saddles will follow the curve of the fingerboard.

So, they're not supposed to be level... on either axis.

I'm new to this so bear with me. If I want to set the "action" lower, does that mean adjusting the strings lower with the height adjustment screws while still keeping them relative to the curvature of the fretboard? Can any Strat be set to either higher or lower action to suit a player's preference?

They all are in the place they are because of intonation and action... watch youtube videos about setting up an electric guitar and you will learn and understand it all and you will be like "Oh thats awesome" :)

Is the ideal action setting as low as possible without causing fret buzz or problems with string bending? Or, is it more just a matter of personal preference?

Well for people who likes extreme low action (LIKE ME) it is a matter of going the lowest without causing frett buzz but for people who doesnt like extreme low action is a matter of personal taste :)

Well, I'm not sure why anyone would not want the lowest possible action, but I'm sure there are reasons. I tried out a new American Std and a new Am Deluxe (which I now have on layaway) and the action on the Std was very low compared to the Deluxe. I liked the lower action and plan to set it up (or will have it set up) low on the Deluxe..

Thanks for the info!
