I have a 2003-2004 fender squier strat body that I am thinking of investing a little money into for a second guitar. Just wandering what kind of wood it is and if its worth the time? Also, it is the hard tail model if that makes a difference.

Check specs in the Squier section of Products.

Alder or basswood most of the time.

Mine is nearly 10 years old, and I think it's alder. I can't be sure though.

Some alder....Some Agathis.... It depends on the model.
By the way, If I were you, I would go for Classic vibe 50 or 60.

Haha! I think the only Straty timber that hasn't been suggested so far is ash. That probably reflects the likelyhood that most timbers have been used in Squiers at some point.

The new-ish Classic Vibe Squier is listed as an alder body, and we're told in reviews that it doesn't have veneered front and back, is a two piece bod, and that the quality of the wood is good. That really represents astounding value for money.

For 2003-4 Squiers I have no idea: my old Squier from over 20 years ago is basswood, to the best of my ability to judge.

Hi 57AVRI, my aforementioned 20+ year old Squier has undergone modding for most of that time. I make no claims for it, but it is to this day one of my favorite guitars. Mind you, only the body timber remains of the original...

Good luck - C

Well I sanded the body down and on all the cutaways you can see the plys. I thought the ply body days were over. If it were basswood or some other cheap wood, would I be able to see the plys?

Squires came in basswood, agathis, poplar, alder, mahogany, cedar and pine. Yes, pine. Some of the newer ones are pine bodies. I am not sure about ash tho.

Basswood is not a cheap wood because its bad they just don't use it as much as Alder because it is harder to finish and has little figuring to it, tone wise not much difference. Weight it tend to be lighter then Alder.
If its Poplar that is almost identical tone wise as Alder but is also harder to finish and is greenish and streaky and is usually heaveir the Alder. Also not cheap because its a bad wood but a finish cost thing.
