I got particularly lucky with this instrument. I spent a long time looking for it, and it's by far the best Epi LP I've ever played. I love it, but I just don't play it that much. It's not really the best guitar for the music I'm playing these days and I have become more and more devoted to the Fender sound lately.
...Part of me wants to keep it around in the hopes that I'll find a use for it, but part of me wants a guitar I can use immediately.

Personally I don't let go of guitars very easily... I have friends that miss instuments they have sold or traded. You need to play some strats to be sure, it sounds to me u have a connection with this instrument even though you haven't been playing it a lot lately. In my past I have waited and added another guitar to the family instead of trading one. I can always sell it later. But that is just me. Take your time and play the strat for sure... Don't act out in haste.

Thats good advise bss most I have sold were bought for that purpose others I would never get rid of.

I understand what you guys mean, and I must confess that there is always the GAS effects. And yes, I am attached to the Epi. On the other hand, I can't see it serving as anything but a backup guitar for the time being. My Telecaster is perfectly suited to the music I play with my group. I think a Strat would make a much more viable second guitar for the more rock-tinged stuff we play, not to mention the fact that this is a pretty decent deal. What it comes down to now is waiting for the guy to e-mail me back, and then making a decision. It's a tough call.

So here's the deal: should I trade my Epiphone Les Paul Custom II for a Fender Hwy 1 Strat -- the new style, with the 70s headstock and rosewood fingerboard?

Anyone have any feedback at all on this? Are the new Hwy 1s as good as the old ones etc?

the highway one is a great guitar however I dont know about the epi ... so I cant give a recommendation :)

Guitars aren't people, even though you may feel some attachment to it, always remember..it doesn't feel the same way about you. I don't understand keeping them around so they can sit in their case and be unused (unless you intend it to be collectible), especially when there's a deal right in front of you that will get you something you will actually use.

I've sold many guitars, and noticed that the ones that get seriously considered for selling/trading,..are not the ones I would miss.

Thanks for all the replies folks, but I've got some bad news. The guy e-mailed me this morning and said that he changed his mind. Apparently he thinks the Epi isn't worth it. Oh well, maybe it's all for the best. I'll save some money this summer and buy a Strat in the fall.

That's the thing that happens when you don't react on your gut decision. Next time you find something you want don't hesitate and ask the lot of us because we all have differing opinions, Yours is the one that counts and you have to live with. Good luck in the future my friend!
